“Nice little break”
Reviewed 25 August 2012

Stayed here for 3 days and really enjoyed the visit. Check in was quick and friendly and room was ready when we arrived. Family room for 3 was booked and we had a reasonable sized room with a double and single bed.
There is potential for a sea view but we overlooked the car park. Not a problem though as we were out and about most of the time.
Bedding was clean but we would have preferred a quilt to blankets. Bathroom was great and shower was spacious and powerful. Our room had adequate storage and room and certainly met our needs.
Breakfast 8am -9am and quality and choice of food is fine. service at breakfast is good and staff are friendly and efficient.
Lounge area at night is family friendly and entertainment is fine.
The management of this hotel are great and they really care about your booking. My booking was handled very efficiently and I hope to secure a return visit again next year. This isn't a modern facility but I felt valued as a customer and enjoyed my stay.
A little hotel, maturing in years but has character! My 7 year old loves it and we hope to return in 2013.

Room Tip: Odd numbers have view to rear and even numbers have sea view.

Just returned from the hotel after a 4 night stay and the weather added to the stunning views from the hotels gardens and seating area overlooking the water. The hotel is a 2 star and I would say thats a fair grade. The hotel is very large and a little dated in areas although was clean. My room was adequate on the ground floor except for the tap dancing elephants above who kept me awake till they also went to bed.
The food was ok a set menu every evening with a choice of starters, main and dessert not forgeting the chefs special which can be ordered the same day and salads. Breakfast was also fine traditional items and kippers etc was always hot if nothing else. Staff also very nice althougth the croquery was sometimes in need of a quick wipe and again was dated. Pleasent staff and good sized rooms if not for the tap dancing I could say restful nights sleep but not. My only real quibble was being told Breakfast at 8:20 and dinner at 18:20 the style was very regimental I understood why yet would of preffered to be asked if I had a prefrance of what time I would like to eat in the 3 slots avaliable.
Overall value for money, food and entertainment suitable for the clientele as was the choice and decorations within the rooms.

Room Tip: Its 3 if not 4 floors high so I would advise the higher the room the better. Some very nice views of...

The Selbourne is a traditional hotel, staffed by friendly and hard working staff,
There are parts of the hotel which are a little dated but the attention to detail provided by all the staff more than makes up for this.
Spotlessly clean, Meals quite traditional and plentiful , bedroom cleaned daily.
Stayed as part of Alfa holidays- hotel geared up for dealing with large groups in an efficient way.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view- the Clyde doesn't disappoint

Fantastic views from back of hotel, wish we had asked for a sea view room!
Room very comfortable and quiet, tiny bathroom but good size shower, nice soft towels. Tea and coffee making facilities and television, nice comfy bed. Radiator in room which we turned off as soon as we arrived but was there if needed.

Food was excellent with plenty of choice although meals felt a little rushed, not much time between courses. Staff were lovely and couldn't do enough to help. Packed lunches were available and were good value for money.

Entertainment was nothing brilliant but good fun.

The hotel is only five or ten minutes walk from the ferry and shops, there is a small museum worth visiting and some lovely walks near by.

The only disappointment and the reason I don't give an overall rating of excellent, was the opening time of the bar, 5.30pm. With such lovely views from the terrace, it would have been nice to sit out with a drink on a sunny afternoon.

We were on an Alfa coach trip and our driver, Alec was brilliant. I would highly recommend this trip and the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have beautiful views.

Travelled with Alfa 19th-23rd March (paid single supp of £20 which compared to other companies wasn't OTT) had asked for a sea view which I got..stunning views of the Clyde..not only from my bedroom but also from the dining room. Meals not brilliant but totally acceptable with plenty of choice for what I paid..I like the fact there was a weekly menu in your room so you know what your choices are beforehand..packed lunches very nice and reasonably priced. Bedroom/Bathroom and sheets/towels excellent ..hotel is clean throughout..staff brilliant and very friendly...not a noisy hotel and had a very relaxing stay..would certainly return again.
A little tip if you are staying for 4 days or more and thinking of getting the passenger ferry from Dunoon to Gourock which runs regularly you can buy a plastic card which has ten trips on it and is transferrable meaning if there is 3 of you it gets punched 3 times it works out at about £17.50 for 5 return trips or 10 single trips it works out half price..they can be purchased at The Rock cafe which is 50 feet from the Dunoon ferry boarding point..I even went to Glasgow on the train which was pennies (about £7.30) for a return trip (the train station is next to the ferry terminal at Gourock)..ps don't forget your camera when on the ferry and get on the top deck :)

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view...well worth it

Visited this hotel with Alfa Travel. Hotel nice but a bit outdated. Reception very helpful, especially Susan. William a bit 'Basil Fawlty' but ok in small doses. Room is all that you would expect, very clean and tidy. Rooms tidied every day. Meals excellent and portions large enough - and hot!. Waiter service excellent and very pleasant. Our waitress was Latvian (Anna) and a lovely girl - so pleasant. Nothing was a problem for her. Entertainment did not add up - none on a Saturday night when we stayed there (Easter Weekend). Coach Driver very helpful and 'good crack'. Tours to Inveraray and Teignabuchien. Cases given to driver at 'pick-up point', never seen until we were in our room - same vice versa. Good service! Hotel in nice quiet area overlooking the Clyde - lots of submarines coming from Fasway. Overall a nice stay and well worth the money. Will go with Alfa again.

Wife and I were there March 19th-23rd with Alfa and really enjoyed our stay.
Hotel was very clean and all staff were pleasant and hard working, felt well looked after.
Food was good with decent sized portions and always arrived at the table hot. Our room was on ground floor at opposite end of building from reception, nice and quiet and very spacious, there was a portable heater which was required early and late.
Entertainment was fine although probably wouldn't suit all tastes.
Great views of the firth from hotel too.
