We stayed in a suite room at the front of the hotel which had a large but dated bathroom with bath and shower over. the room itself was furnished with old, classical furniture and the room whilst needing a lick of paint was quaint and clean. the large sleigh bed was nice. The only fault was the old fashioned very small tv which is not really acceptable in this day and age for a good hotel. The hotel looks really nice from the outside and on the inside has all the old original features but it could do with a bit of a facelift. Staff were excellent and could not be faulted. Breakfast very good indeed and you are allocated a table when you arrive at the hotel for the duration of your stay. The ghillies bar was good for a drink and the food we saw being served looked and smelled really good but we did not eat there.

We just turned up off the ferry and the manager gave us a sea facing room on the top floor. The exterior looks superb but the interior, while old and original, needs some TLC. Our room was clean and had everything we needed although the TV was a bit small. The bed was very comfy. We ate in Ghillies bar, Not the best quality or selection of food but reasonably priced. Breakfast was perfect food wise. We were given a table number for breakfast when we checked in. When we came down our table, table10, wasn't set for breakfast so the waiter offered us table 2 by the window. Just as we sat down, the people who had been allocated table 2 arrived so we were moved to table 18. You guessed it, just as our bums hit the chair, the people for 18 arrived. Other than this our stay was fine. The hotel has a magnificent staircase with a very old looking stained glass window which while spectacular, needs a damn good clean. The staff on the whole were very good and are a credit to the hotel.

Stayed at this hotel for a 1 night stay found hotel to be weary and in major need of a refurb, when you come down from the 3 rd floor the window sills are filthy have not be cleaned for a good while very noticeable.
Ate dinner in Ghillie Bar meal nice the one thing I will say about this hotel is the staff, very very good and work in what is difficult circumstances in my opinion, garden at entrance very tired looking.
In our room we had a power problem with sockets and light ( didn't work) this was reported at the end of our stay so maybe this is sorted, shower was hot and worked well, room are tired looking and still have the old key style lock, hotel has no lift, all in all I cannot recommend this hotel in its current condition I hope this is helpful to someone

Room Tip: No comments as I only saw my own room but if you have a walking difficulty the top floor is not for...

The exterior of the Royal Marine Hotel looks fantastic, especially if, like me, you're a sucker for faded Victorian grandeur. Unfortunately, what lies beneath - specifically in Ghillies Lounge Bar - is horrific.

Although the prices and descriptions on the menu lead you to believe you'll be getting decent-quality pub food, what arrives on your plate is obviously the cheapest microwave garbage that the management could import frozen from Eastern Europe. Our soft drinks were standard bar prices, but had evidently been sitting at the bottom of a 2-litre plastic bottle for some time, going by the fact they were completely flat.

The service was pleasant enough, and the staff did agree to take one of the meals off the bill as it was literally inedible. I did feel quite bad for them as they're on the front line having to defend the offensive quality of their meals. It's not the fault of the staff that the management has such open contempt for customers.

The building and location are spectacular, so it's a real shame that the food is so insultingly bad - it's places like this that continue to give the UK a bad name for food. At a guess, this place continues to scrape by only by being able to fool each new ferry-load of tourists into eating there once, rather than relying on repeat business.

Having sampled some of the other establishments in the vicinity, there seems to be a sizeable gap in Dunoon's market for a good, reasonably-priced family pub or restaurant offering edible food and friendly service all day in the summer months. I'm not a massive fan of chain restaurants, but a McDonalds would be eligible for a Michelin star compared to this place.

I'll sum up by saying that Ghillies offers NHS-standard food at big city prices. Avoid at all costs.

West Coast Harley Davidson laid on a Hawaiian Theme party at the Royal Marine Hotel to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Harley Davidson and the 30th anniversary of the Harley Owners' Group. Most of attending were also staying at the hotel overnight, and that included us.

The hotel's organisation was excellent. We were made to feel welcome from the start. Registration was done in a professional, courteous and friendly manner and we were apprised of the hotel facilities etc. on check-in.

We had booked a sea-view room which was clean, very traditional and had a four-poster bed and an enormous bathroom, with a free standing bath as well as a self-contained shower. In addition, the bed was very comfortable.

As part of the party, the hotel provided a buffet and cocktails, which were delicious. Throughout, the staff were all very friendly and helpful and the whole experience was very good value for money.

On the negative side, the hotel was beginning to look a bit tired and could have done with a fresh coat of paint.

Overall, the positives well outweighed the negatives and I would have no hesitation in using it again.

Room Tip: I can't compare with the other rooms, but the sea-view rooms are a good size with all mod cons.

Attended a party here, and the general facilities seemed OK. However, our bedroom was a big disappointment. Very plain and tired. NO SHOWER......in 2013, are you kidding. Old yellow bath helped to show how much dirt was coming through with the water, both hot and cold. Tried several times to run this off, but the dirt just kept on coming. Don't know if the recent hot spell had something to do with this.
Toilet seat was also bursting with dampness and needed replacing. Very unhygienic. Should have mentioned this. Also the creamer for the coffee was off. Still in date (by a month), but off. Didn't mention any of this at the time, but probably should have.
Party was good. Staff seemed nice and breakfast was quite good.
Would not stay here again unless the bedroom accommodation gets a much needed upgrade.

Room Tip: Ask if the room has a shower.
