“Quirky!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2009

We stayed 2 nights DBB on a cheap mid week deal. I can see where some of the reviewers are coming from. Yes the rooms are dated and could do with a bit of paint and paper, the loo is carpeted..unusual! and some of the pictures on the walls may have been there since the 70s. Never the less it grew on me..bit like a cosy old sweater!!. It was spotlessly clean, the staff were extremely friendly and efficient. We ate in Ghillies and could fault nothing, infact we thought we would be hit by extra on our bill as we seemed to be able to have whatever we wanted on the bar menu plus coffee..seemed to good to be true. Breakfast was great and a plentiful choice. The building is beautiful from the outside and has a stunning stained glass window...a makeover with some history of the building would definately be an asset. The location is perfect..straight of the ferry and it's across the road,it's worth paying the extra £5 each per night for a room with a view. I personally hate boring travel lodge clone like hotels so am quite happy to stay somewhere with a bit of character..it all adds to the experience!!

If you strut your stuff to "Staying Alive" and and "Sweet" still brings back memories of Glam Rock in the 70's then this hotel should please. First off the staff are by far the best part of the hotel - polite and helpful however after this the only way is down. Tired and dated rooms and bathrooms - ours was a pale blue suite with white toilet lid, yellow peeling wallpaper and blue waterproof wall covering. The room had a tiny old fashioned TV on a table so far from the bed that you required binoculars to watch it. We did not eat Dinner at the hotel as we did not like the look of the restaurant and it was empty. We did however have a "bar meal" in the Ghillies Cafe Bar downstairs in the hotel. My husband ordered a baked potato with chicken curry filling and salad garnish - the reality when it arrived was frightening - 2 huge potatoes with enough chicken curry for a main meal and a large salad portion stuck to the plate in a sea of oil which had oozed out from the curry. Very nasty. Breakfast the following morning was a strange affair - tinned "fresh" fruit, stale cereals, economy sausages, undercooked bacon and rubber scrambled eggs. May I never stay at this hotel again - hopefully nature will take its course and it will close due to lack of custom.

We arrived on the ferry and the hotel was right there at the terminal. Lovely setting, very welcoming staff. We had booked a front room with a view and were not disappointed. It was lovely, spacious and the view was spectacular. Very quiet at the time we were there, it livened up a bit at dinner time, when the restaurant was packed, and not just with hotel guests. Food was excellent and a varied choice would suit most people. Service was good.
The hotel is immaculate and staff very friendly. Would look very good in wedding photos! They do lots of deals for 2 nights with dinner included which are great value for money.

We chose the hotel as a trip down memory lane, having spent easters as a child in the nearby caravan park, and having very fond memories of the wee shop and the ferries.
Our stay didnt start off too well however, my husband being very fussy about where he stays and the dawning realisation that the website gave a too good impression of the hotel standard, not forgetting that trekking up three flights of stairs with all of our luggage to the ' family' rooms didnt help.
The room was very clean, no complaints there but the decor and the bathroom were very very dated.
Dinner the first night was not great, an opinion shared by other guests. The prawn cocktail was accompanied by dried curled up bread and the venison tasted like boiled cardboard. I wasnt too impressed either when the bottle of wine we ordered arrived at the table already open. Our window table kept our young son entertained tho watching the cars come on and off the ferries.
The next day we slept in for breakfast however the chef kindly cooked us our own breakfast ( havent ever experienced that service at another hotel), and there was a nice touch of a wee easter egg for everyone.
Dinner the second night was much better, maybe the night before had been chefs night off.
Overall the service was friendly and we got the impression that the staff would do anything to make your stay better. The bar downstairs has clearly had a revamp and was very pleasant. Moreover we have travelled often with our children at various stages and it was the first time we have ever been given a baby bath, changing mat and sheets and blankets for the cot ( usually hotels seem totally oblivious to the fact that you cant put a quilt on a baby).

Overall a good impression but if you are used to a pretty good standard of hotel then be aware of the decor before you book.

The Royal Marine has great views, competent management and helpful staff combined with clean, comfortable rooms and fine food. You could not ask for more in a hotel. The convenient location right by the Western Ferries terminal makes the hotel easy to get to and it is a great location for motoring around the Argyll & Bute area and further afield. The "Ghillies" bar and restaurant is atmospheric and the comprehensive menu offers great value, as does the hotel's accommodation prices. All in all, a fine place to stay.

We stayed for a weekend to see friends in the area. To be greeted by the owners upon arrival was the start of a brilliant time in this lovely hotel. Staff attention to detail was brilliant and the breakfasts wonderful - even the chef came out to ensure we had enjoyed the meal. The room with a wonderful sea view and of the ferry comings and goings was excellent and totally soundproof.

We had a winter weekend break with some friends, and the hotel staff were wonderful. Our room had a view over the loch to the rolling hills beyond, and one can watch the ferries as they ply their way across the water.
The building is interesting, lovely Victorian stained glass, and good quality furnishings so it has a very welcoming feel.
There's a cosy log fire in the bar, and the food was really good. There's a bar called Ghillies which is obviously popular for bar meals. The restaurant food was excellent, I particularly enjoyed breakfast; generous servings, very fresh ingredients and friendly service.
