Booked a double room overlooking the river at this hotel, and weren't disappointed by the location. As you come over the bridge it sits gleaming in white and the downstairs lounge and restaurant are very polished. We had great customer service and were shown up to our room which had original features (original sash windows) overlooking the river and right in the centre of town. The room was adequate. The mattress was comfortable and the bed linen crisp and clean. The room itself was in need of a lick of paint and generally tidying up a bit. Our bathroom was very much in need of some upkeep - the walls were two shades of white, which looked as though someone had started painting the top of the wall, and then run out of energy before they got to the bottom leaving half of it dirty cream. The fittings in there were also in need of replacing, and it took a rather long time to run a bath and for the water to change from freezing to warm (let alone hot).
We wandered from the hotel around Dunkeld which is pretty, and then opted to have dinner at the hotel in the bistro. This again needs some tidying up, and actually surprised us because the food was lovely despite the surroundings looking like a pretty average pub. We opted for venison burgers, which were handmade and very hearty and tasty. All presented very well and very much enjoyed.
Since we had been travelling for most of the day to get to Dunkeld, we had a fairly early night, and the hotel is quiet despite being next door to another pub which has live music and was very active. There was a little road noise from cars crossing the bridge but then that's to be expected and didn't interfere with sleep. The pillows weren't great but at that I'm just being picky.
On the whole, it's a lovely hotel in a beautiful location, with great food and very polite and good customer service. The hotel is just a little tired looking, and needs painting and a good deep clean. Beyond that it is ideal. The view and it's position on the river sells it totally. If we were to visit Dunkeld again, I'm not sure we could find better. To say this hotel is in need of a bit of upkeep, is only to say that it is like the other hotels in this beautiful town. The Royal Dunkeld that we walked past, looked like it hadn't been painted or the outside tidied in years.......The Hilton which has very grand gates and a long drive leading up to it, slightly away from the centre of the town didn't look overly impressive itself! So for the money, and for the perfect location, the Dunkeld is great. Don't expect perfection as it's a bit tired - but other than that - well worth a visit!
