“Disappointing”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

The old 14th century manor that stands in the centre of the resort looks fairly attractive from the outside but unfortunately that is where it ends. The addition of various buildings from the 1980s makes the whole place look like a badly designed cheap caravan park. Our King Room in one of the newer wings was small and dark with very low ceilings and a desperately tiny bathroom. It is very dated and is in bad need of refurbishment. When we arrived, the drive signposted "reception and check-in" was coned off (because of a wedding we later found out) but there was no sign informing arriving guest of what to do. In the end we had to park in the golf club carpark and try to locate the reception area on foot. Staff training is poor. Attempting to order coffee in the lobby was shambolic as a confused young lady had no idea where to get it from and implied that we had to pay cash as we may not have sufficient credit with reception to cover the £3.30 charge. Dinner in the Morgan's Restaurant was good though and breakfast had a reasonably good selection of both hot and cold items. Golf might be good here but the hotel is nowhere near the four star it claims to be.

We are sorry for any confusion caused to you with the courtyard area being blocked off. We take on board your feedback and will be looking into additional signage for such occasions. When you next stay with us we would like to recommend our Courtyard Rooms which are the converted stables and overlook the 14th Centry Manor house and which we feel confident you will enjoy.

We stayed in a double - not the best rooms - very tired bathrooms and quite small. Spa is ok, but definitely been to better - prices are ridiculous for location/ambience. £38 for a 25 min massage rivals my central London therapists prices. Also only lasted 20min. My husband enjoyed the golf and considered it to be a fairly good course. Food at Morgans is ok, definitely not fine dining as they attempt to be. Although steak was very good, rest was average. Wine selection is ok.
Breakfast variety is very good - hot breakfast, various egg options, cereals, fruit, baked goods.

The staff are very accommodating and helpful (especially the reception staff).
This could be a great place with some updating and an improvement in the dinner fare.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a suite, the doubles are small and don't have great views. Think the lakeside...

16 golfers visited the resort for a birthday weekend, several of us celebrating birthdays from 60 - 80. A few days before arriving we were informed that we couldn't use the Mathern Course unless we had winter wheeled trolleys as the course was so wet. Access from green to tee was horrendous! Most of us didn't so we were "upgraded" to the Old Course, which we now had to play twice. Our initial round should have been at 11am, but because we were "upgraded" we couldn't play until 2.30 - 3.00pm. It was past 8.00pm when our last group finished their round in the dark and so, by the time we had showered etc. we were not eating until 9.30. Too late for us! The menu was particularly limited as we had a "special" deal -this made us feel like second class citizens - and even though we had spoken to the staff earlier in the day we were offered only one other choice of dish. Disappointing! The staff in the restaurant were quite pleasant, taking orders for drinks and offering us water at the table, for which we were presented with a bill for 6 bottles of water! Tapped!
Access to our room was not a pleasant experience as we had to walk outside through the rain to what I would call the annexe. The immediate impression here was not good as the stair carpet needed cleaning! We then travelled down to the basement! An unusual experience. The room itself was clean fresh, but its aspect was disappointing and the bathroom was small.
Bar prices were initially expensive and whatever drink one requested the most expensive version of that was supplied. We got wise to this eventually. Some of the waitresses serving snacks from the bar could, at times, be quite off hand.
All in all, not a pleasant experience.
Thankfully, we had good company, so,the whole weekend was not a total disaster.

My partner and I visited in the hotel for a weekend break in April 2014, arriving on Friday afternoon and leaving on Monday morning. We planned to use the hotel as a (fairly luxurious) base for cross-country hikes exploring the Wye Valley, and it proved very well-suited to purpose!

We stayed in the Courtyard section of the building, in one of the upstairs rooms. The room was lovely and very clean, with a nice en-suite bathroom containing the usual shower/bath and fittings. A highlight of the room for me was the very thick original walls, topped by modern extension to give the full room height -- this definitely contributed to the quietness overall!

We ate in the Zest bistro on our first and last nights, and had good service both times -- as a vegetarian, I had several options to choose from on the menu (multiple pizzas, salad and a vegetarian pasta), which was nice. On one evening, a misunderstanding over the wine that we had ordered was cleared up immediately and a new glass was brought over free of charge. On the Saturday night we ate in Morgan's Restaurant, and were similarly pleased with the food and service. A full English breakfast, which was included in the price of our stay and brought to our room each morning, was also very well done, with impressively large portions -- enough to fuel us both for 5-6 hours of cross-country walking each day. Fellow travellers should be aware that there is £3 service charge for room-delivered breakfast -- but given that we were already receiving the breakfast as part of our room deal, this seemed like a small price to pay!

The swimming pool and hot tub were also very nice facilities: clean, beautifully lit and spacious enough that sharing with other guests was not a problem (just as well, as they seemed to be quite popular while we were there!). While we didn't use the gym, it also looked very appealing (larger and possibly better-stocked than our own commercial gym at home).

Finally, we found the staff to be uniformly helpful and friendly -- and the local area was just as beautiful as we had hoped. I was very happy during my stay at the St Pierre Marriot, and would be very pleased to visit there again.

Thanks for the great feedback. Hope you aren't aching too much after all that walking. Maybe next visit you can spend more time in the jacuzzi!

We stayed for an overnight in April 14. Looks a great hotel and the drive up through the golf course is impressive. Reception staff attentive and helpful. Room was ok- clean and fresh. Gym and pool area very good and enjoyable. Main restaurant was very busy and not available till after 9.30 so opted to eat in the Zest restaurant. We found it to be OK, but nothing more. On par with a premier inn- expected a little more. Sleep was OK but our room overlooked the 1st tee. No problem with this but we were woken at 5.30-6 am by vehicles below the room with reversing beep-beeps. No idea what they were but a very unwelcome early morning call

Breakfast was served in the main restaurant and was very good- plenty of choice and eggs cooked to order. Set us up for the whole day.

This hotel claims to be 4 stars but our room certainly was not. The main building is really nice, the reception staff were very friendly and polite. Our room was located in the lakeside village area which is separate from the main building, but not very far away. The room had no fridge, the radiator controls were at ground level so were difficult to reach and did not do much as we had it turned to maximum but it wasn’t very warm. The bathroom is in drastic need of modernisation (it seems a post-war bathroom), rusty mirror, rusty metal parts on the shower, the floor tiles were very old, the toilet seat was very old and yellow, there was no loo brush, more a horror place than a bathroom. The shower was fixed so the choice was a full shower or a bath. OK it is mainly for golfers but still they will need a decent shower.... There were 2 cupboards full of electric wiring which were open. Breakfast was buffet style, eat what you want, the choice was ok but limited. We did not eat in the restaurant, we ate at the Indian restaurant just round the corner which was not very good. Will we stay again? No, it would be impossible to convince my wife...

Room Tip: Avoid lakeside village

My partner decided to surprise me with this stay, I thought I was staying in a small well known branded hotel, you can imagine my delight as we pulled up in the beautiful court yard, I fell in love, until...Reception took a while to see to us, my partner had put some requests on the booking form, such as a good view & a possible up grade, the guy at reception asked US who we had booked with? He also said the requests had not been read (why is there a request box then) he proceeded to read them & said that all rooms had all been taken etc, well if it had been read when they received it maybe the rooms would not have been full?? I am not complaining about my room, it was nice, small but nice & the window looking out to the court yard was rather small & blocked by some great big boxed off area...The Spa was okay, but I have stayed in many 3, 4 & 5* hotels & compared this to most 3* spa's My main problem was having to walk through a bar/restaurant getting some odd looks off the customers, this made me feel extremely uncomfortable, hence we only had one trip there, when normally we would be back & for quite a lot...
In the morning I rang to see where our breakfast (included in price) was, the card had been taken from the door handle, but they seemed to have lost it, on telling them want we had wanted it was brought to the room, but my appetite had lessened by then...
Sadly this hotel seems only to care for it's wedding party's & Golfers, US 'leisure guests' seem such an inconvenience to the staff...
Yet another beautiful hotel, that sadly i could not recommend for leisure breaks!!!!

Room Tip: Call & speak to reception, DO NOT rely on them checking your booking requirements!!
