Central and serene--this was well nigh perfect accommodation in Hay-on-Wye. Although I'd stayed in other Hay B&Bs before and been satisfied, the Tinto House website looked promising and certainly worth a try. It turns out that Karen Clare and her husband John have created a small jewel in the heart of Hay. Their welcome is warm, the rooms are comfortable, handsomely (but not ostentatiously) furnished, and sparkling clean. Breakfast is excellent. Maps, literature, and good advice are readily available. Hay is at the front doorstep, but when you've had enough of bookshops and shopping in general there is a well-planned and carefully-tended garden through the archway at the back of the house. Guests are warmly invited to enjoy this haven for as long as they like. For this traveler the search for a good place to stay in Hay is over. I can't imagine a better spot.

We booked a 2 night stay at Tinto House as it was the only B & B in Hay on Wye that had a vacancy at short notice (less than a week before we were due to go). It sounded nice on the website but no-one had posted a review on Trip Advisor since 2003 so we weren't really sure what to expect. We needn't have worried as this is a brilliant little B & B. The welcome was friendly (from a relative of the owner who was away at the time) and we were encouraged to make use of the beautiful (and huge) back garden which has lots of places to sit and relax, read, or whatever. We were in the twin room as it was the only one available and it was lovely, with comfy beds, tastefully decorated and furnished with antiques in keeping with the rest of the house (Georgian) and with a modern en suite shower room. Me and my husband are vegetarian and our hosts were happy to make us whatever we fancied for breakfast in place of the usual full English. The locally made bread was gorgeous. Tinto House, at £70 per night for the room, in the middle of summer was really good value we thought and our hosts were useful souces of local information and happy to chat. The B & B is in an excellent location right in the centre of Hay, opposite the clock tower. It doesn't have a car park but we had no problems parking on the street nearby. Hay itself is a brilliant place for a weekend break if you are even remotely interested in second-hand bookshops as the place is crammed full of them. We ate out at the nearby Three Tuns pub and at the new Indian restaurant which has recently opened in Hay (sorry, can't remember the name, but there is only one) and we would definitely recommend them both. We've been to Hay many times but this was the first time we've stayed there and we certainly hope to go back and stay again at Tinto House. We felt really at home - except that this place is much nicer!
