“No Longer there”
Reviewed 26 February 2013

Sadly the quirky 'royal' bookstore is no longer with us. King Richard has abdicated and the castle is now owned by a charitable trust and is going to be developed into a visitor 'attraction' for Hay. The area that was his royal Highness' book shop has already been renovated and is in fact a rather beautiful space, most recently used as the venue for a New Years party. A pop-up store has opened in the high street and vestiges of the reign of King Richard are still visible there along with a sample of the king's more select books.

worth looking at, but don't go out of your way.
Wasn't a lot to see. Wasn't particularly a nice site.

“A castle thats a bookstore - crazy!”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

Pretty much every building in Hay on Wye seems to be a book store, including the semi-ruined castle at the top of the town. Totter up the cobbled lane and wonder through the cramped and musty rooms to find some literary treasures. It was a surreal experience but very worthwhile!
