Spent a very relaxing week here, very near the centre of Hay yet quiet - you can pop back with your purchases after each book shop! The cottage had everything we needed and we had a very comfortable week. Having parking is a real bonus in Hay.
We would happily come again.

“Making hay - a decentish place to stay in Hay-on-Wye!”
Reviewed 19 March 2015 for a stay in March 2015

First, the owner was very helpful throughout the process of booking Chancery Cottage and promptly answered any queries I had. The cottage is well positioned right in the centre of Hay but in a quiet spot - Chancery Lane- with little to no traffic, although of course Hay is relatively quiet anyway except for perhaps when it hosts its annual book festival in May! However, the garden of a tapas bar backs onto Chancery Lane and in the summer months I can envisage it being pretty noisy and therefore the cottage might not be the best place to stay for families with young children during the school summer break. Its good points include being clean, presentable and comfortable / central heating / off-road parking / a nice little walled garden with seating / DVD with the TV / iPod facility with the stereo. Its not-so-good points include the front bedroom (where my husband and I slept) remaining very warm and quite uncomfortable as a consequence to sleep in at times, even - very oddly - during quite cold nights in March with the radiators turned off and the windows open! The skylight in the rear bedroom (its only window) did not appear to open. The tumble drier of the washer/drier did not work and the weather wasn't good enough to hang wet washing in the garden so we didn't do any! The hot water failed on a number of occasions and the combi boiler had to be reignited - very inconvenient when one's in the shower!!! There were conflicting messages in the instruction manual left by the owner with regard to recycling: on one page it said to put any recycling out Thurs eve for collection Fri morning and on another it said recycling was collected Weds morning - all very confusing and something you don't really want to have to deal with when you're on a well-earned holiday and in need of a complete break. We put our recycling out on the Friday morning only to see it all still there on Saturday when we left...hey ho.

Liked best: It was very much as advertised and was in a good position to enjoy Hay

Management Response
7 Apr 2015
Thank you for your feedback and in response to your experience at Chancery Cottage it would be good to address these points so future guests are clear on the facilities supplied at the cottage.

Chancery Cottage is a refurbished stone workers cottage dating back to the early 1900's so as all stone buildings it retains the heat. The rooms are "cottage" sized and if the heating is on during the day and evening it becomes very warm in the bedrooms which is ideal in winter months. However in the summer the cottage can be cooled by keeping the windows in the bedrooms open during the day.

The skylight window in the second bedroom is a velux window which opens by pulling down the lever attached. The window is working and fully operational - however if you not familiar with the velum design it may prove difficult to open. A note will be added to the Instructions manual.

The hot water is supplied by the Combi bolier. A local plumber has been to the property since your review and found it to be fully working. If you experience this in the future please do call when and if this happens so it can be checked and corrected during your stay.

There is a note in the manual that states the drier is not currently working so the Owners apology for any inconvenience. A washing line and clothes pegs are supplied and the drier will be operational shortly.

Recycling information in the manual was not consistent due to recent changes to the Council Recycling dates so this has been amended.

The Owners want their Guests to enjoy their stay at Chancery Cottage and will address comments as they arise. Thank you for your feed back and look forward to your return.

“Lovely cottage”
Reviewed 4 February 2015 for a stay in February 2015

Great location in the centre of Hay, which is a really friendly and interesting town. A well supplied cottage with all the necessary kitchen equipment and very nice bathroom. A small but comfortable cottage, great for a base for exploring the local area.
My only complaint was that I found the mattresses too soft, but that is probably down to personal preferences - my husband was very comfortable.

“Perfect cottage for exploring Hay on Wye”
Reviewed 23 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

My girlfriend and I stayed for a week in Chancery Cottage and we can honestly say it was absolutely perfect! Located in the very centre of Hay (walk out the front door and you're virtually already at the shops) it was still wonderfully tucked away and quiet at night. The cottage was clean, warm and cosy, and had everything we needed. Very good value for money and we can't recommend it highly enough - look forward to returning soon.
