We stayed at Kilverts last year and again this year, for 3 nights each time. This time we were in room 11 (Shakespeare) which was absolutely gorgeous with original beams, standalone shower and jacuzzi bath and windows to front and back of the building. The bed was incredibly comfortable. We had another very friendly welcome from Sheila and family and all staff were attentive and efficient. The food was even better than last year! Four of us ate on two evenings and nobody was disappointed with their choice. First rate value for money and highly recommended.

I will never ever stay here again, nor will I recommend it to anyone - quite the opposite. I feel I should have been offered a refund. Awful attitude of owners when I attempted to raise a complaint with them. They did not want to know and would not listen and just argued with me. My weekend was ruined by them. The husband was especially rude to my wife I felt and in front of other guests too. I have written a very hefty letter of complaint to them as putting it in writing may be the only way to get them to actually take on board and listen to what I was saying. We came away feeling very upset by their attitude as it was so unnecessary and if they cannot take a valid complaint (cold room, no heating in bathroom and then none in bedroom or bathroom the next morning -they had provided one electric heater - luke warm shower, January!) and deal with it politely and professionally I feel they should not be in business. I was not being unreasonable: we were cold, the shower was luke warm and there was no heating in the bathroom and the heating throughout went off at 10pm (regulated by the owners not the guests) and did not come on in our room the next morning with snow on the ground outside and freezing temperatures. However, whatever the complaint, the client in my opinion should be listened to and dealt with politely not rudely. My wife told them that they appeared to forget who was paying whom but they were talking over me so much they probably failed to hear this.

We stayed over the Christmas period and will never stay again. I have been coming to this hotel for three years and have enjoyed our stay, always a nice fresh clean room, good breakfast, lovely town and chatty locals. The 2 night break we just uncounted was a nightmare. We were checked in by the rudest girl ever, who told us that the room we booked has changed (fingers crossed upgrade) now staying in room 2 not room 10 that we booked and told that the price was the same!. We had a long journey so decided to take the room as we were so tired & hungry. Evening food started at 6pm so came down and asked for a menu & the young man behind the bar gave us One and said maybe some specials added when the chef has turned up. 15 mins later the girl from checking us in (now know this is the daughter) said they were not cooking and told "go and look for somewhere else to eat". We did and ate at blue boar, lovely. On returning the girl was sat down drinking with the locals and was shouting so loud at the poor barman everyone heard, off to bed we went. Lovely sleep by the way. Breakfast was a no no as the girl did not show up at all and there was others to that were just sat there and thankfully the lady housekeeper came in and gave us hot drinks and lots of toast. We stayed away all day. On checking out the next day we had food items placed on our bill but told no food!! What a disaster the whole stay was, other staff friendly and clean room even know the place looks like a junk yard.

We booked a twin room and got a great deal via booking.com and stayed for New Years Eve. Great old building and loved the cost atmosphere in the bar, with a real fire. Our room was homely, yet clean and had a modern bathroom. There were nice touches like books to read in the room and a hot water bottle (not necessary, the room was well heated). Finding our room was hilarious - the building is a real rabbit warren.

The staff were very friendly. However we had to be very patient ordering food and queueing at the bar for lunch and dinner. There was only ever one person serving at the bar and taking food orders - may be it was because it was New Years eve, but it tried some people's patience - not mine (even though they forgot my lunch and I had to go to the kitchen to remind them)!

Lunches and dinners are served in the bar - at around £10-£16 for mains and are fine. There are also plenty of other places to eat in Hay. Breakfast was served in a separate area and was cooked to order and was all good.

Room Tip: If you don't have what you want in your room - just ask - the reception and kitchen staff are re...

After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor I was worried that we had booked somewhere terrible for our anniversary! However, it was a really nice stay and we would go back.
The owners were away at their other hotel (he was recovering from an operation) and we were greeted by Lee who was the duty Manager. He was very friendly and told us everything we needed to know and we felt very welcome - and by the end of the night we had been made to feel like one of the locals! When the owners' daughter took over the following day it felt less relaxed and organised and we were momentarily forgotten at breakfast (no place set and delays in service) but we received an apology and all worked out fine.

The room (room 7) was over the bar and looking onto the square. It was very clean and comfortable and nicely decorated ... the ensuite looked the part with marble tiles and nice little gels etc - the only criticism was the size of the bath which was so small and lacked a hook for the shower attachment so it was quite hare for us (at 5' 6") to be in the bath and wash... I would advise booking a room with a proper shower or a bigger bath, especially if you are taller than us!

There was a good choice at breakfast - the poached egg and ham was nice (ham a bit cold compared to eggs) and the cooked breakfast was huge with a nice variety including black pudding... certainly enough to set you up for the day walking if that's what you choose.

Some people have posted about the noise for the 'night club' opposite and there is a British Legion club opposite in the square which has a 'disco and karaoke' on a Saturday night and which finishes at midnight... this didn't bother us - we found it quite funny - but if you wish to stay here and go to sleep early I suggest you ask for a room at the back over-looking the car park which I am sure will be very quiet!

Overall we would recommend this to anyone looking for a short break in Hay-on-Wye. We didn't sample the food on the menu but the prices and content seem to be the same throughout the town - perhaps the quality differs? The price of beer (£3.40/pint), and especially wine (£6/ large glass) is steep, but this seems to be the case all over town and we can vouch for the quality of beer at the Kilvert - it's much better kept than in other local pubs!

Room Tip: Room 7 is at the front and therefore can be noisy from the bar beneath (until 11pm) and the British...
