“Something from history or just run down”
Reviewed 4 June 2012 via mobile

My cousin and his wife invited us on a walking holiday near the Black mountains and suggested we stay at the swan, which going by their web site looked like a good bet.

We arrived after a long journey looking forward to our weekend away and arrived at the hotel in the evening looking forward to a glass of champagne and a cream tea.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by a pleasant chap on the reception which was a warm welcome and given the keys to our room. Then it was downhill from there;

We opened the door and the bed looked as though someone had just slept in it, the floor hadn't seen a vacum for sometime and the wardrobe looked like it featured in a horror film, it had that much dust. We did complain and in fairness the receptionist did run upstairs with a Hoover. However it needed a little more than that, there were still half eaten biscuits on the side board. The room either needed to be renovated or condemned.

The staff of the hotel were very pleasant, but the hotel was very run down, the breakfasts were also good.

We were advised to raise our concerns with the manager, which I did via an email, but to date have not had a courtesy of a response. So I guess they were not interested in constructive caritas ism. The surrounding pubs were fantastic, it's a shame we made the wrong choice

The reception staff (one man) was very polite and helpful and the room was well decorated and comfortable. However the restaurant was scrubbed tables in the bar and despite having booked about a month earlier they did not have a table for us. The wine list was poor and our selection deplorable. The rib eye steak was not rib eye, had been overcooked ( well done as opposed to the rare ordered). The one man reception staff also doubled as head waiter and spent a lot of time placating dissatisfied customers. The jumbo chips which accompanied the rib eye had been sitting in warming tray for some considerable time. In all the experience was not enjoyable. It was a pity that the breakfast room, which was delightful, had not been used for the evening meals.

We stayed a couple of nights in a superior double room at the front of the hotel. It was spacious, comfortable and quiet. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Apart from the opportunity to browse through the many bookshops, Hay on Wye is at a crossroads of the Wye Valley Way and the Offa's Dyke way, so there are plenty of walks around.

The Swan Hotel is slap back in the middle of the town. - less than a 100 yds from the Cinema bookshop!
The Hotel oozes character and history, enhanced by the creaking floors, the room walls askew, and the blazing open fire in the Bistro.
While dinner in the Bistro was not cheap (there isn't anywhere 'cheasp' in Hay-on-Wye), the quality was high and quantity generous.
Moreover, the breakfast room had a grand elegance about it - with the high ornate ceilings, and 'period' furniture.
The room was a comfortable size - neither cramped nor spacious..
Although checked out about 10.00 allowed to leave the car in the car-park for a few more hours - when we finish shopping in the town.
One thing to be aware of - reception for o2 mobile reception is poor in the town, especially so in the Hotel.

We popped into The Swan for a drink in their beer garden on a very warm spring day.The garden is delightful and this year has new garden furniture which is a bonus.Whilst we were there, there was a mix if locals and tourists, families, couples and groups. We had our 3month old with us and I needed to change her nappy however when I asked where I could do this was told "feel free to change her on your lap or you could do it in an empty spare room".I chose the latter. I am happy and able to change her on my lap but I didn't think it was fair for the people around us to watch. When I was shown to the spare room I was told that the Land Lady feels that as she had to change her children on her lap why should she spend money so others don't have to! I also found out that the hotel also has no disabled toilets.

On arrival even though the receptionist was polite the checking in procedure took a long time. This on asking was found to be because the room allocated to us had been given to someone else who had not yet arrived. This was not a satisfactory way to start especially as the hotel was apparently full. The alternatve solution would have been that we would have been put up in another hostelry which is what happened to the other couple allocated to our room. There should have been a bottle of wine in the room on arrival, but we had to request this.
The room however was spacious, comfortable and clean.
The food in the Bistro did not meet our expectations for the prices charged.
However in the bar an enjoyable time was had with members of off duty staff and their friends.
Breakfast was fullsome and well cooked and served at your table.

Hay-on-Wye is an interesting town to wander around with plenty of independent shops as well as the 30+ bookshops. It is also well placed for exploring. We drove through Llanthony and over the mountain - fabulous views but a one-track road.

We stayed in a courtyard room at The Swan which suited us very well. All the staff we met were charming and efficient. They all seemed to be enjoying their work and to have pride in providing excellent and cheery service.

The evening meal in the bistro was good, though possibly a £ or so overpriced I thought. All in all an excellent break.
