went to a wedding party here but I can honestly say what a shambles it was, the bar staff didn't have a clue what they were doing, there was only one of the two bars being manned and even then they couldn't cope, they had ran out of certain drinks, different prices for rounds everytime someone went up ,blocked toilet with no loo roll in the other ,so all in all couldn't wait to go home!!

From Traveler A (worldwide traveler that spends lengthy stays in France, Spain and United States):

"I went with very high expectations and was thoroughly pleased. The hotel lived up to its self-description. The personnel were delightful and the breakfast and the dinner were very good. The bed was very comfortable. Thoroughly modernized, the hotel maintained the attraction of an earlier time. I had read the reviews by earlier clients. I do not understand what the people who wrote the negative comments were looking for."

From Travel B (A picky traveler currently living in the UK, travels often between China, US and UK):

From the negative reviews, I had feared that this would have been a pretentious outfit that was not in keeping with the world famous surroundings both in terms of the bookshops and the Welsh countryside. However I decided to take a chance, and this was a good choice! We had very comfortable bedrooms that were well appointed. As other reviewers have commented, the floors in the older parts of the building still creaks, and I am glad that the proprietors have kept this feature in place. It brought great giggles of delight for me and my fellow traveler as we walked to our rooms and found the creaking a wonderful addition to the charm of our visit to Hay.

We had dinner at The Bistro which served superb French inspired Welsh Fusion cuisine. The dinner service is in keeping with the French inspired name and it provided French service that is common to Paris, where guests in restaurants are provided un-rushed service where the conversation is as much a part of the meal as the food. Traveling from another small village in the Southeast of England, I found the prices to be of good value for the quality that is served. The BBQ Pork Belly was a wonderful, mouth watering end to the day that nourished a hungry appetite after a long train journey to Hay. What was even more surprising was the breakfast that was so good it gave a bigger appetite than I thought I would have had getting up so early in the morning. It fueled five hours of book hunting through the rest of the day. The Swan at Hay simply will take very good care of all your needs (within reason) during your time in Hay.

Room Tip: Rooms 14 and 15 are wonderfully sized rooms but they are up a fairly steep set of stairs

Spent one night here whilst visiting my brother on the way home from the Lakes.

A Georgian Inn with all the expected foibles! Slightly wonky floor in the room, odd passages and little stairways - just wonderful. I love these old Dickensian Inns that haven't been spoilt by needless "modernisation".

Large room (No. 3), great views over the town and the Brecon Beacons, hearty and tasty breakfast, friendly and helpful staff.

Just great for a quick stop-off

Room Tip: No. 3 is large, airy, comfy bed, looks over the beautiful hotel garden and across the town to the Br...

Stayed at the Swan as a result of an offer but upgraded to get larger rooms. Stayed for two nights, this hotel is quirky but definitely defined by its staff who were courteous, friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble. A local hotel with local people and used local produce. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.

Before even arriving I was made welcome. I received a tweet from the hotel wishing me a safe journey. I booked 4 mights in my favourite room (room 3) and again had a wonderful time.

Very friendly hotel with clearly hard working staff. On a couple of nights the hotel was completely booked but this still didn't effect my stay. Room was bright and clean, with fresh towels everyday. Breakfast was always served quickly and still hot. Large selection of food, including kippers and fresh fruit.

Perfect location, very close to all the bookshops, the bus stop, and the tourist information centre. Hotel has its own car park.

Favourite part was sitting outside in their garden area in the evening. Beautifully kept garden, very clean, with a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Drinks could be ordered from the bar and would be then brought to your table.

Thank you to everyone at The Swan for a truly wonderful week. I am planning my next stay already x

Went to Hay to visit friends, but decided to stay at The Swan for two nights. My mistake was booking theough Lastminute.com instead of ringing the hotel direct. I was only offered the most expensive twin room, at £270 for two nights, bed and breakfast. Having done this, looked up The Hay website, and discovered I could have had a much better deal which was offered until 31st August. This was dinner, bed and breakfast on two nights with the third night free! When arriving at the hotel, I mentioned this to the extremely helpful receptionist, who referred this to her senior, who said she definitely couldn't give me a similar offer as Lastminute.com take 20 percent themselves, therefore leaving her no room to manoeuvre. I won't be booking through Lastminute.com again! Overall the hotel was good, rather old fashioned and a little tired, but the staff were pleasant and the dinner ok, though nothing special. Breakfast on first morning good but came on cold plates, so abit tepid by the time it reached us. Overall ok experience, but couldn't help feeling 'miffed' at losing out on the special offer. There's a moral in this!

A very friendly hotel. The staff were courteous and helpful. Food (we only had breakfast) was well cooked and presented and delivered promptly after ordering.
Our room was on the court yard. It was clean and tidy and basically appointed.
Well located to wander around Hay and a pleasure to return to after a hard day shopping.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems the ground floor court yard rooms will be a good choice.
