“Fantastic hidden gem!”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

We wanted to visit Hay for a couple of days and chose The Bear mainly because of the TripAdvisor reviews. Needless to say we were not at all disappointed! We stayed in the double room which was really cute and we weren't worried about having a shared bathroom as we were the only couple using it.

Facilities were great, the bathroom was really well done and the shower was lovely. Breakfast was delicious with plenty on offer. The bread used for toast was not just any bread, most certainly fresh, local produce which is lovely to see.

Kudos to our host too who was attentive and chatty without being at all intrusive and was more than happy to supply us with synthetic bedding for us as my husband is allergic to feathers!

Thank you again for a great experience, we both thoroughly recommend for anyone going to Hay.

Hay on Wye-a lovely part of the country and a very charming little town.
The Bear couldn't have been a nicer experience. Everything was faultless from the comfortable en-suite room and general feel of the place-spotless, smart and stylish, to the lovely owner David whose friendliness and calming way made us feel very welcome.
Breakfasts were a treat with the most delicious fresh homemade compots and a wide choice of menu all freshly made to order.
Highly recommended - thank you!

The attention to detail here is exemplary. Breakfast ingredients are chosen with care; and in the bedrooms the milk, for tea and coffee, is provided in a thermos flask. Furniture and bed linen is what you would wish for in your fantasy house. Out of season, the town itself hibernates. If only it could tempt the visitor as much as this B&B does.

We have stayed at The Bear twice now, both times have been in December. We are sure that we will make it to lucky number three and beyond. David and Andrew are truly welcoming hosts. From home made treats in the room, to having our beds made for us during the day, a stay at The Bear feels indulgent. Attention to detail and service is keenly felt. Our hosts provided up with maps and anecdotes on local walks, reliable restaurant recommendations, and even posted my phone charger home after I'd left it plugged in at the bedside. Needless to say, it almost arrived before I did! Thank you.
Breakfast are yummy and bespoke. David and Andrew made an effort to prepare vegetarian specials, and even bought soya butter when Matteo was enjoying his meat free dairy free phase.
The food is locally sourced where possible.
As you look at the website you will notice how stylish the house is. In reality, it does not disappoint. Somewhere between Scandanavian and urban cool, there are lovely seats, cushions and throws dotted around the rooms and communal areas. The beds are very comfy and the bedding and pillows add to the sense of luxury.
A perfect retreat. I can't wait to visit in Summer and finally make the most of the pretty patio!

The house, the ambiance, the greeting, the service, the room, the en-suite, the breakfast, the cost - all perfect. We loved it! The only niggles we had were that it is quite difficult to find, parking is tight and the wifi signal strength could be improved. If you are in the area, this is the place to stay though you will probably have to book early.

Room Tip: We were in the twin-bedded room because the double bedded en-suite room was occupied so book early.

Great place to stay - welcoming host David has an eye for detail, tastefully furnished room at a fraction of the expense of a faceless hotel. You can breakfast like a lord, freshly cooked with care, set us up for a day's book hunting. Overall excellent standard - couldn't suggest any improvement (except a brew and some cake in the lounge on arrival!).

My husband, not known for getting excited about things, said The Bear was easily the best B&B he has stayed in. The warmest welcome, outstanding care and attention to detail and such a beautiful building. David couldn't have been more welcoming or attentive, and his cooking was delicious. We had home baking on our tea tray each day (yum) and a wonderful breakfast. Thick cotton bed linen, squishy pillows and duvets, proper fluffy towels and all the other little things that make a big difference. Convenient parking out the back and its within a minute walking distance to the town. Perfect in every way! We already loved Hay.. now we love it even more :-)

Room Tip: We had the double with separate (private) bathroom which was a little cheaper than ensuite. It was c...
