How this place has been rated 4 stars I really do not know! It smells as soon as you walk in the door, hygiene is not their forte. The whole place is in need of a revamp as it is tired and old. I had a treatment in the spa which was the most unpleasant experience of all....the beautician left me for a good 15 minutes as she needed a fag. Classy. This hotel is in a dire need of a visit from Alex Polizi.

We won a nights stay here and after reading all the reviews I was tempted to not take up the prize. The reviews say it all really - sure it is clean and the staff are friendly but is that not a given? We didn't eat at the hotel and didn't use the pool so can't comment. The bedroom was ok, the bed was really comfy and it was quiet until 7am when a banging noise persisted - think it was from the plumbing.
I think the main problem is the scale of the place - bit like that Sarah Beeny doing her house up thing on the tv. It would cost millions to renovate it. The corridor leading to the rooms must have been 7 feet wide, the gap between the bath and the wall about 1 foot! Carpet in the corridor was taped up. The worst bit for me was the bathroom - it was clean but mouldy and grotty and the windows and soap dish were horrible - I have been in better bathrooms on campsites.
Having said that, there aren't really any alternatives - this is probably the best hotel in Buxton. Would I have paid to stay here - no - but lots of people obviously are.

I had expected so much more form a 4 star hotel, but then I hadn't allowed for the wonders of British hospitality. If one were just a tick-box person it might seem quite a reasonable hotel, but there were some real problems. Our group of 5 were sharing two rooms, but the room with 3 people only had towels for 2. There were leaks in the corridor that seem to have been there for some time. The hotel smelt damp and seemed a bit worn out (it even had artex ceilings in some rooms). The worst of it was the breakfast: £12.95 for a buffet breakfast that would look sub-standard in a motorway motel :(

We got a great welcome from the desk staff who were curtious and knowledgable. The room was well appointed and confortable. The bathroom could have risked being refitted as it was a bit dated but it was clean and tidy. The hotel is pretty grand but has been well maintained rather than updated to follow the times.

We had a great stay and the retro experience was fun.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper as for a room away from the church side - the bells strike the hour all n...

We booked a one night stay, bed breakfast and evening meal which also included tickets for Chatsworth House our main reason for our short break. The hotel was lovely the staff very friendly and althought the bed was not to best I have ever slept on it was ok we had a good nights sleep and dispite the fact there was a wedding party in the hotel that night we were impressed by how quiet it was. We had the pool to ourselves and although a little hard to find the changing rooms we had an excellent time
Overall exeptional value for money

Stayed here for two nights early July. It's a huge hotel and as other reviews mention, there are areas which could be adapted. I use the word adapted rather than improved because I quite like the character of the place. It's old and grand, the outside shouts this and the inside confirms it, with it's grand staircase and chandelier which drops the full height of the building!

Our room (324) was really lovely & clean, very big, lovely dark wooden furniture. Big lcd tv and plenty of complimentaries both in terms of coffee, tea and also in the bathroom (shower gel, shaving foam, razor etc).

The staff were really friendly with nothing too much trouble. I recollect booking out and a very rude elderly lady guest interrupting the guy whilst he was dealing with us. She just stormed up to the reception placed her card on the desk and interrupted us. The lady then impatiently walked away and left her card behind, and was politely asked to return by the guy behind the desk. Very well handled because I felt myself getting angry at her rude attitude/behaviour.

We made use of the free leisure facilities too which was an added bonus. The pool was ideal for a refreshing swim.

The location of the hotel is excellent. Just a short walk down the steps and you're into the main centre.

I would recommend this hotel.

If I had one gripe it would be the £9 car park charge for the 2 nights.

We were given a one night break from our daughter at the Palace hotel, on arrival it looked very grand but once inside it looked very drab. The furniture looked like it had been there since the hotel was built. We were given room 308 it had lots of space the wardrobe looked very old we dare not put our clothes in it, the tv didnt work but was changed 3 hours after reporting it broke. the room was very hot , the towel rail in the bathroom was very hot you had to be careful not to burn you but again why have one in summer? We didnt find the staff very nice at all in fact there wasnt many of them but the manager seemed ok.Buxton is not as nice as it used to be, we did eat out but when the weathers bad its a little boring.
One thing i would warn guest about beware of the car parking charges at £4-50 per day .
I would say to the owners of the hotel update a little tell your staff to smile a little and perhaps have a little entertainment on at the weekend .

Room Tip: Ask for a twin they seem to be bigger than a double and ask for a room at the front of the hotel and...
