Absolutely not worth paying £137 per night. Room was small, old fashioned, smelt damp. The hotel is in dire need of updating and decorating. Chipped worn paint, blown plaster, damp patches on ceilings. The service was not very good at all. Our afternoon tea consisted of 'dainty' figure sandwiches which looked like bricks; nice cakes but on a wobbly cake stand, and the tea cups and saucers didn't even look good enough to be used in a prison. We have stayed in some lovely hotels for this price. Do not stay here if you are expecting something special for your £137!

We booked to spend one night at The Palace Hotel in July 2012. The first two rooms we were "offered" were totally unacceptable and the third, a "superior" room was only acceptable because it was at least big and had a lovely view of Buxton and the surrounding hills. This hotel decoration is tired and dated and all fixtures and fittings are either very old or very cheap. At a room rate of £138 per room bed and breakfast I was expecting rather more. I would NOT recommend this hotel and will NOT be staying there again should I return to Buxton, which I might add was charming. Furthermore, I will never book with a PUMA hotel again. Avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: If you really must book to stay here make sure you get a room at the front of the hotel.

Room smell of damp, mould on ceiling, wooden sash windows that jam, no aircon, curtains that don't close, worn mattress, small pokey room. Doesn't appear to have room service. Has a dodgy lift which I was worried about getting trapped in. They offered to change my room but I checked straight back out before the damp and mould triggered an asthma attack. I was staying on business with a group of collegues. Was greeted at the desk on check in as if a coach party - key and registreation form in an envelope - by receptionists who don't think its their job to check you in and provide any information on breakfast or evening meal.
I did not stay for dinner but my colleagues did - there was no dinner choice just one meal plonked in front of them! Fawlty towers style!
I cannot believe they have 4stars, I would be doubtful if it would even get 2 stars if the inspectors revisited. It would probably be ok for back packers.

How this place has been rated 4 stars I really do not know! It smells as soon as you walk in the door, hygiene is not their forte. The whole place is in need of a revamp as it is tired and old. I had a treatment in the spa which was the most unpleasant experience of all....the beautician left me for a good 15 minutes as she needed a fag. Classy. This hotel is in a dire need of a visit from Alex Polizi.

We won a nights stay here and after reading all the reviews I was tempted to not take up the prize. The reviews say it all really - sure it is clean and the staff are friendly but is that not a given? We didn't eat at the hotel and didn't use the pool so can't comment. The bedroom was ok, the bed was really comfy and it was quiet until 7am when a banging noise persisted - think it was from the plumbing.
I think the main problem is the scale of the place - bit like that Sarah Beeny doing her house up thing on the tv. It would cost millions to renovate it. The corridor leading to the rooms must have been 7 feet wide, the gap between the bath and the wall about 1 foot! Carpet in the corridor was taped up. The worst bit for me was the bathroom - it was clean but mouldy and grotty and the windows and soap dish were horrible - I have been in better bathrooms on campsites.
Having said that, there aren't really any alternatives - this is probably the best hotel in Buxton. Would I have paid to stay here - no - but lots of people obviously are.

I had expected so much more form a 4 star hotel, but then I hadn't allowed for the wonders of British hospitality. If one were just a tick-box person it might seem quite a reasonable hotel, but there were some real problems. Our group of 5 were sharing two rooms, but the room with 3 people only had towels for 2. There were leaks in the corridor that seem to have been there for some time. The hotel smelt damp and seemed a bit worn out (it even had artex ceilings in some rooms). The worst of it was the breakfast: £12.95 for a buffet breakfast that would look sub-standard in a motorway motel :(

We got a great welcome from the desk staff who were curtious and knowledgable. The room was well appointed and confortable. The bathroom could have risked being refitted as it was a bit dated but it was clean and tidy. The hotel is pretty grand but has been well maintained rather than updated to follow the times.

We had a great stay and the retro experience was fun.
