“Great family break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

Palace hotel Buxton
We stayed in a family room during half term. The hotel is beautiful but looking a little tired in places. It's a large grand building and I imagine up keep is similar to painting the 4th bridge. The expense and time required to keep it on top top lines would be considerably
We were in family room 122. Two single beds and one double which was great for our 12 and 10 year olds as they always moan when they have to share a double ! Lots of room a small side table a two chairs. Bathroom tired but clean and serviceable shower could have had a bit more power. Downside were the beds , 4 nights of not great sleep as the bed was very hard and uncomfortable.
Sports facilities : fair size pool but water a little chilly. Sauna and steam room good. Gym good selection of techno gym equipment and a separate room of free weights. Never busy. Pool open till 10pm so kids happy as no restrictions for them.
Food : we were on a DBB package. The children were always offered a kids menu - usual selection of fish fingers burgers or nuggets but our children ate off the adult menu and we paid 50% of that cost. Worth it ! Food was a very good standard and the menu changed every day offering 5 choices of starter main and desert. Breakfast a buffet style with cereal bar, hot fry up, toast, pastries, cold meat and cheeses, fruit and pastries. Certainly set you up for the day ! Would certainly take the dinner option again if we re visit. Serving staff excellent
All in a great hotel for a family break and we would stay here again if we are in the area. Our break for 4 nights DBB two adult two children cost £600 in half term I thought that is was very good value for money. It's a shame they feel the need to charge £3 a day to park our car in their car park.

Room service, £7.50 for a cheese sandwich and then........£5 for delivery. The coffee in the bar is more expensive than Costa. Fantastic location, great building but you just feel like you are being ripped off.

Stayed 2 nights for a family wedding at another hotel in Buxton. Family room reserved 3 months ago was only setup for a couple on arrival so an extra bed, towels etc were requested. I had expected a family room would have had 2 doubles. If you book a family room it's worth phoning ahead to check they have set the room up and the bed configuration.

Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of variety and choice available and staff were friendly and attentive. Note: Breakfast for 6-16 year old is £3.50 per meal and is not included within family room rate.

Room itself was large but tired with old furniture. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom needed a refit...must be at least 30 years since last done and it looked it. A couple of easy chairs in the room would have been useful and the room could have done with some pictures on the walls. It's an old building so expect creaky floorboards. Corridors to 2nd floor rooms very old and dingy and again in desperate need of decoration.

Parking is £4.50 per night per car. Very good location for Buxton amenities.

Overall stay was ok but the place needs a fortune spending on it to return it to its former glory. It will require an owner with very deep pockets to achieve given the amount there is to do.

Room Tip: Phone ahead and ask if they have any refitted rooms.

Stopped by here today for lunch for my in-laws, who had fond memories of staying at The Palace 25 years ago. Has clearly gone downhill since then. The food was expensive and resoundingly disappointing (eg £14 for a frozen burger and chips, some bagged salad and a few rings of red onion, £6 for what tasted suspiciously like tinned tomato soup, with a roll). As if all that wasn't bad enough, the service was terrible - waited an age for the food to arrive (some of it stone cold), and had to ask twice to pay (and wait almost half an hour), with one particularly rude waiter making it quite clear that he did not (could not?) be interrupted (ie politely asked if payment could be made) while he was ineptly trying to deal with one other table in an almost empty conservatory. Buxton is a nice town - don't waste your time or money on this place.

A nice hotel which needs updating. Staff good. Beds roomy but bedding uncomfortable and cheap, I'm afraid. Plenty of eateries in Buxton. On a Puma leisurebreak deal it's a good deal but they need to sort the pillows and duvets!

We stayed at this hotel recently for a family wedding. It is an old building and has lots of character, however it is quite dated and requires some love and attention.

We stayed on a reduced wedding rate for two nights, the room was big and the bed comfortable, but the room was very hot, even hotter once I'd spent two hours doing my hair for the wedding! The windows would not open very far and the hotel could not supply us with a fan.

Overall, an average stay, but it was quite expensive in comparison to other higher quality hotels I have stayed in.
