Stayed for 3 nights from 11 Aug. As we were going to the G&S festival I selected this hotel for it's good location near the town and Opera House and plenty of parking.
Pleasant, friendly staff and nice room, big roll top bath room for 2!!. Breakfast was a treat, over 40 cereals and preserves and lots of fresh fruit. Full English freshly cooked.Had 2 dinners both excellent, and good value, Braised Steak melted in the mouth.

Rooms, food and drink were great value. Staff were excellent and couldn't do enough. Breakfast could have gone on forever with a huge choice of cereals and the widest selection of preserves I have ever seen on top of excellent cooked food. Dinner was varied and very good value, with excellent specials. Plenty of reading material provided free of charge. Only draw back was the "Cameron Diaz" room smelt of stale cigarette smoke, also wish we had had king size beds but these weren't available in the rooms we booked. Loved the decor, made a great change from the usual homogenous chain hotels and all only minutes from Peak District ( and only 40 minutes from Alton Towers).

Stayed at this hotel before and quite pleased. This time, cutbacks on the food, evening meal mediocre. Breakfast ok. Small room (room no.6), no room for a chair even. Tiny bathroom, but quite clean. The crux came when on Sunday morning there was no hot water for a shower. Apparently problem with water system. Next morning, still no hot water. We were told we could go to one of two rooms to have a shower, but decided not to. No apology was given and no discount. Won't be staying there again.

We walked into the hotel and requested for 3 rooms and were quoted 75 pounds for double and 85 pounds for triple. We were given 3 rooms in different floor as they said were fully booked. Creaky floor boards and stairs. The walls were damp. The basement room was stuffy. The 2nd floor room and the 1st floor rooms had strong cigeratte smell although this hotel was supposed to be not smoking throughout. We were in the 1st floor room overlooking the main road. The rooms needs reburbishment. The toileteries were fine but there was no hot water for the extra tiny shower. It was around 9+pm and the noises from the ground floor pub were loud. After we complained, we were changed to another room at the 3rd floor with nice view of the hills, skylight and bath tub. Strange that when we requested for a room with view, we were told that the hotel was full. The quality of the rooms in this hotel differ greatly. Had we been given the roomy 3rd floor room from the inception, we would have a completely different opinon of the hotel. The best part of the hotel is the service - quick and attentive. But will we return? No we would not as we do not want to run the risk of getting a bad room. The food was average. Breakfast has a wide range of choices but it is quality that we were looking at and it was lacking. There are a few photographs of Gordon Ramsay at the entrance of the hotel, obviously he has yet to pay the kitchen a visit. It is certainly not a 3 three or four star hotel.
