“Not a peaceful night’s sleep”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

The hotel is very well located, the staff are very professional and you get a friendly welcome on arriving. The hotel rooms could do with a bit of modernisation especially the bathrooms, general decor and windows which allow a lot of road noise in throughout the night. Downstairs looks as though it has had a makeover and is well presented, bar is well stocked with drinks and a hearty breakfast awaits you in the morning.

The staff at this hotel were a pleasure and very friendly.
The location was good for the centre of town and there is limited parking.
The breakfast was of good quality generally although one of our party felt the bread was rather chewy.
I understand that they are renovating this but the problem is it’s just not finished yet.
The reception area and breakfast room are tastefully decorated but the three rooms we had left a lot to be desired. Yes its an old building and they are in the process of updating it but to be honest two of the three rooms we booked were not really something I would feel comfortable letting out.
Two of the three single rooms did not have a head board making keeping the pillow on or comfort very difficult.
The bed in one of the rooms was an old single divan. The linen was clean.
However the shower room was just to say decorated to a suitable standard with a very dated shower curtain and a very old piece of string attached to the plug which was not really hygienic.
My bathroom was clean but one of the travel companions had to clean her toilet as it had not been scrubbed and even the toilet brush was not clean. The towels were not cleaned but left over a radiator to dry.
The wardrobes were at best old and at worst one of our party would not unpack as it was not really suitable or clean enough.
One of the three rooms was decorated acceptably but one of the others had a massive piece of wallpaper hanging off which made it have the appearance of a doss house to be honest. Similarly in the yard there were no less than three shopping trolleys.
The furniture was a mixture of second hand pieces and some made access difficult to the wardrobe

The Portland is in an excellent location although parking is extremely awkward as there is very little space. We were allocated Room 24 which comprised of a double and a single however, when my husband sat on the double he virtually fell to the floor. On close inspection, several of the bed struts were broken so there was no support for the mattress. We were then allocated Room 7.Both bedrooms were very lack lustre with dated decor, no bathrooms, just ghastly old showers with blackened corners contained in tiny rooms dimly lit with noisy fans. Toiletries consisted of a miniature soap and a shampoo sachet neither of which were alluring although the refreshment tray was well stocked; the beds at least were comfortable. Our evening meal was rudimentary, pretty tasteless and probably involved packets and tins and there was no draught beer available; breakfast was an improvement however and very satisfactory. This hotel does not have "superb facilities" as it states nor does it offer "an unparalleled sense of comfort" however, both the friendly waiter and waitress worked tirelessly to please and can't be faulted. We were quite disappointed and will not be returning.

We arrived later than expected to a very warm welcome from the staff on duty. The hotel is in a superb location very close to the Octagon where we were spending the evening at a Northern Soul event. The room was large, bed comfortable and had everything we needed for a pleasant nights stay. Breakfast was superb, generous portions, and very helpful, friendly staff. We would recommend the hotel as being excellent value for money, and would return.

Very impressive on arrival, the Portland is a handsome Georgian hotel and a very grand looking building located directory opposite the Pavillion gardens and just a short walk from the very pretty town centre.Couldn't fault it, nice room in a lovely old building with high ceilings and sash windows, we'll furnished room with good decor, clean and comfortable bed. The breakfast was lovely and fresh and piping hot.
Would I return? Yes definitely.

We booked last minute for a £110 Double Ensuite. Room was clean but basic and shabby. Bathroom was TINY, no window, no door on shower but just a curtain.Light wasn't great in the room. The toiletries provided were slightly pointless, one small soap and a 10ml shamp/cond sachet per person.
It wasn't unpleasant, but for £110 we expected A LOT more. If your paying £60 for that kind of standard then thats acceptable, but certainly not over that. Breakfast was the same kind of standard, not great but not awful.
Staff are lovely, the welcome was charming and the waiters are happy to help. Apart from that, its not worth the money.

The room was dirty and sheets needed washing or replacing with new ones, the place has been refurbished and I believe to be under new management which is not so was disappointed that only a few things have been done to try and make the hotel look better.

Room Tip: my room was very small so make sure you get a big room
