We stayed here for a night over the Bank Holiday weekend. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the hotel was spotless and the breakfast was scrumptious. Buxton is a lovely place for a short break. We look forward to a return visit soon.

Spent a wet Bank Holiday weekend at the Old Hall. Not the best start ,as the Receptionist was rather unfriendly and unwelcoming , which was a shame as the rest of the staff were most helpful.
Bedroom was very large and comfortable , with a marvellous bay window and view of the Crescent and parks opposite.
The highlight of the trip was breakfast in the main restaurant , which included Derbyshire Oakcake a local delicacy served with eggs and beans , a great way to begin the day.

Room Tip: Room 29 was large and had a great view of the parks.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review on Trip Advisor. I've very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. I can only apologise that you didn't find the receptionist friendly, but am very glad you thought the rest of the staff were very helpful.

We are extremely proud of our award winning breakfast, and I shall pass on your kind comments to the chef.

Broke a journey south by spending a night at the Old Hall Hotel in Buxton on a Dinner Bed & Breakfast deal, it was our first trip to Buxton and certainly it will not be our last as it is has a great deal to offer from culture in the Opera House Theatre almost directly opposite the hotel to beautiful rolling hills for walking and cycling. The hotel is old but comfortable like a pair of your favourite slippers it is bang in the middle of Buxton and the whole town up and down is an easy walk, the Opera House and the excellent park are at the hotel's front door. Our room was small with no view from a window that overlooked the roof of another part of the hotel, it was clean and comfortable although the shower was rather weak but as we were only making a one night stay it was adequate. Dinner was served in the main restaurant which is looking rather tired and could do with a make over, our enjoyment of the meal was somewhat spoiled by the staff making up the room for breakfast the next day. The meal itself was good value my wife particularly enjoyed the lamb it was served by friendly staff who made you feel at home, they are justifiably proud of their breakfast. The Old Hall is obviously a bit of an institution in Buxton and the pre-theatre meals in the bar area are very popular it suffers a bit from a lack of outdoor space but the park is a step across the road for your past prandial stroll.

I'm pleased that you enjoyed your meals and were impressed with the cleanliness of your room. I shall mention to the restaurant staff not to be too eager to lay up for breakfast in the future.

So often the Peak District gets ignored in favour of its burlier cousin over in the Lakes. Maybe it's a water thing: the Lake District's secrets are laid bare for all to see in Coniston or Derwent, whereas the Peak District's pools are hidden deep in the earth, waiting to be tapped to see them spring, quite literally, into life.

By the time that the Victorians discovered that Buxton's waters had qualities that were reputed to see off a variety of ills, turning it into a destination for hopeful patients from across the country, and far beyond, the Old Hall was already a hotel and staging post some three centuries old. Reputed to be the oldest hotel in England Mary Queen of Scots stayed here and many of the hotel's pictures, etchings and maps tell a wider story of more than somewhere that just does an award-winning breakfast.

Mind you, it's a startlingly good breakfast. The menu not only offers the full English, served at the optimum temperature with lashings of tea, coffee, toast and preserves as well as the Continental items and fresh fruits that now come as standard in any hotel worth its salt but also unexpected pleasures like milk-poached smoked haddock and lemon kipper. It's a meal that can set you up for the day and urge you to don the boots.

The town itself is a collection of independents, internationals and downright arcane; the estate agents rub shoulders with the walking shops while the trendy boutiques bustle for business in some cutely carved out contemporary shopping centres. The Opera House dominates, art is everywhere and the rain arrives in crisp clean sheets.

Buxton Spa. Not a myth: a great beer served with style and melodious memory. Visit the Old Hall and you won't be disappointed. If you like quaint without being cloying and if your idea of a country hotel is the sort where you might expect Agatha Christie to deposit a body or two then it's for you.

Room Tip: Overlook the park if possible

We stayed in Buxton to attend a family funeral so though a sad occasion brought us to Derbyshire we were very impressed with the warmth of the hotel staff-excellent dinner and delicious breakfast and the room we stayed in at the front of the hotel was charming-cant wait till the new spa is developed and then we will return on a happier reason !

A two nights stay here was sheer pleasure, enhanced by beautiful spring sunshine. Our group of old friends seemed to be extremely happy with the arrangements made for us by the hotel. My wife and I enjoyed the comfort of room 31, where the superbly comfortable bed, at least 2 metres by 2 metres, ensured excellent sleep. The two dinners taken were both excellent, the breakfasts substantial, good beers in the bars and a good selection of wines, as is frequently the case currently in Britain, mostly sourced from the new world.
Parking may be a bit of a problem but buy your cheap rate ticket from reception and from the large car park behind the Pavillion seize your moment to move it later in front of the hotel. Don't expect air conditioning bur do appreciate the beautiful old building and its artefacts, notably the reproduction of the writings done by Mary Queen of Scots (and France), by scratching a diamond ring on the glass of her window when a prisoner here. The lift is also a historic monument, but it works !

After a very warm welcome, we were all shown to our very spacious and comfortable rooms. A all times all of the staff were very helpful and most pleasing of all, with a smile on their face.
All areas of the hotel were spotlessly clean and the food served in the dining room of a very good standard. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay at The Old Hall and look forward to staying there again.

Would recommend a visit.
