A very well-situated place for sightseeing. The hotel is very clean and the rooms well equipped. The breakfasts were excellent and the pre-theatre dinner menu interesting and the food well-cooked. The staff were without exception very pleasant and the service good. The only drawback was that the bedside light switch was so high I had to get out of bed to switch it off!

First the good bits: Room was excellent, very clean and the decor was very good. Stopping in an old hotel means that you experience floors which slope etc. and this is all part of the old world charm that sets it apart from modern hotels. The position within Buxton is excellent with the park directly opposite which is one of the best I have encountered. It is great for children with lots of activities and more ducks in the river and on the lawns than you can count - it is idyllic!!
Sadly the restaurant was not as good as we would have hoped for. Side dishes of "Buttered" Carrots and "Buttered" Broccoli were missing the butter completely as it would appear that when the veggies were placed in the serving dishes someone forgot to include the butter. I guess the same person might have been responsible for the exclusion of any prawns or scallops in my Ragout. My wife's serving had plenty whereas I had none. This attention to detail is frustrating to say the least as it is so easy to get it right and more care should be taken in serving the items as described in the menu.
I would definitely recommend it as a hotel but not as a restaurant. Breakfast was excellent and there were lots of residents in attendance but there were very few at the evening meal the night before so perhaps this tells a story?
It would be nice if a porter was in attendance to help with luggage that has to be carried up the stairs or crammed into a very small passenger lift as multiple trips to and from the car are required.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review on trip advisor. I'm delighted to hear that you did enjoy the majority of your stay. I'm very sorry that you did not enjoy the restaurant meal. I have spoken to the Chef in order to ensure this does not happen again. There is always a member of staff available to help with luggage if you ask at reception. I do hope we can welcome you back in the future.

Great location in the middle of Buxton and only staying for one night. Hotel came well recommended on TripAdvisor so no hesitation in booking. The room i stayed in was old fashioned by today's standards but comfortable and clean. Would have no issues staying there again.

Buxton is reviewed by the Times Newspaper as one of the most desirable places to live in England. There are parks which have the beauty to rival any park in London, with the lovely little River Wye running through the town. The Opera House gives a lovely centre piece. The hotel Old Hall, in The Square, Buxton is the icing on this cake. The front rooms (with two high ceiling sash windows) are literally surrounded by gently rising park land, and the river Wye can be heard faintly in the backgroud. At night there is absolutely no traffic noise. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom lovely. Furniture is strictly reasonable weight fairly large Victorian. The restaurant is obviously an attraction as every table was taken by 8.30 p.m. Food just excellent. Some imagination in the dishes offered, and plenty of fresh well prepared vegetables with the meal. A cheaper but no less delightful option is the wine bar, with its internal cool patio area. We were delighted and will go back again soon.

Room Tip: It really is worth the extra to have a room at the front of the hotel. These room are surrounded by...

This hotel ( reckoned to be the oldest in the country) is uttely delightful. The rooms are well equiped but have a slightly Edwardian feel to them and the staff are superb. Breakfast was just great and all in all the perfect place to stay when visiting the Peak District.

This hotel is in a great location right in the centre of Buxton. The staff were pleasant. Nice room, but design problems such as tea and coffee facilities where kettle lead didn't reach plug, so had to be put on floor. Hotel reception very old fashioned, booth-style, where you have to bend over to talk to people inside who are seated at desks. No lobby area to meet people. Breakfast generally good, but items ran out and had to be requested before refilled.

We were a group of 29 staying at this delightful hotel in the centre of Buxton. It is ideally placed for shopping, the Theatre etc and, in our case, visiting beautiful gardens in the Peak District.
The Reception staff had us checked in very efficiently and all the rooms were comfortable, especially the beds. It is a bit of a 'rabbit warren' as it is a very old building, but the room numbers and directions are easy to follow once you've located the signage. Some people had problems with the hot and cold water in their bathrooms, but may not have been following the 'operating' instructions.....
The staff were very helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. My mother was ill on the last morning and Toni in Reception was terrific, offering advice and telephoning her Doctor's surgery etc.
Breakfast was of an exceptional standard and the only disappointment was the choice at Dinner. The a la Carte menu and Specials all looked mouth watering, but our choices were dismal and disappointing. I do understand that catering for a large group has to have restrictions, but this is our fifth year staying at different hotels around the Country and, sadly, this was our first lacklustre set of choices. Quite a few of us commented on this to Reception and I'm sure those comments will be passed on to Management and the Chef. Our Coach Operator also left a formal 'complaint'.
I look forward to revisiting one day and dining from the a la carte menu!

Room Tip: Even though quite a few of us had rooms at the front of the Hotel, we had no problems with traffic n...
