Did not intend to stay here but the bad weather meant we could go no further and on the recommendation of a policeman we found a little gem. Tea on arrival, spotless large room and a warm welcome. A first class guest house with wonderful host and a breakfast that lasts you all day.

A warm welcome awaits when you arrive from both Barbara & Alan, you are greeted with a friendly face and a cup off proper coffee and biscuits,a really nice touch on a cold December afternoon
The hosts were very informative about things to see and do in Buxton,we took there advise and went to "Barbarella's for lunch (of which i am to do a seperate report on)
The room was spacious, clean, warm and well decorated, nice touch with the decanter of wine and sweets .....thank you
Breakfast was at a time chosen by yourself. It was a good full english breakfast, well cooked and using quality ingredients
If you are in the area give the Victorian a try, booking will be essential
TOP WEEKEND !!!!!

Room Tip: The Peverill if you want a bath

It's almost two years since I last reviewed the Victorian Guest House and I'm happy to report that standards show no sign of slipping....the same warm, friendly greeting, the same comfortable, spotlessly clean rooms and the same magnificent Full English breakfasts are all still available.

This was, in fact, our third stay at the VGH and we again chose the Haddon Room on the first-floor front of the building with its relaxing view of autumnal trees fringing the town's municipal gardens.

The difference this time, however, was that our daughter was with us, staying in the adjoining 'striped' room which is equally well-appointed and has, in some ways, an even better en-suite bathroom. She was equally impressed by the accommodation and the only fault we could find was that the complimentary wifi was a little 'in and out', a problem for which the owners can hardly be blamed - especially when they warn that the service is "variable" on their website.

To sum up, if we visit Buxton again, I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

AROUND AND ABOUT

If you're eating out, the Firenze in the Market Square offers well-cooked, tasty Italian food at reasonable prices and if Tex-Mex is your thing, then I can also recommend the Lone Star in George Street but be warned, the main course portions are huge so you may want to give starters a miss - I could only eat about half of my Jambalaya and I only leave food on very rare occasions.

If you're interested in history and don't mind driving a few miles for an enjoyable day out, then Little Moreton Hall across the county border in Cheshire should not be missed, Not only do you get some breathtaking scenery along the Buxton to Congleton Road for free, you also get a very enjoyable guided tour of an Elizabethan house, the like of which I have never seen before.

Finally, if wildlife is your thing, the Chestnut Centre is only a few minutes drive away neat Chapel en le Frith. If you've never seen a giant otter before, make sure a visit is on your Peak District itinerary, and there are plenty of other animals to view too in the 50 acres of landscaped grounds.

Room Tip: If you need a firm mattress, I suggest you bring this to the attention of the owners when booking. The one in the Haddon Room, for example, is quite soft.

We very much enjoyed our two-night stay here and Barbara and Alan were excellent hosts. The location is perfect - in the centre of town near the Opera House and right on Broad Walk. Shops, restaurants and the sights of Buxton were all just a short walk away.

We stayed in the family suite (West Wing room on the top floor), which was spacious with two separate bedrooms and a shared bathroom. One room had a double bed and one single; the other room had two single beds - perfect for kids. The bathroom has a cubicle shower with no detachable shower head and no bathtub, which could be a challenge for families with small children. The room was comfortable and the carafe of sherry for a nightcap was a nice added touch.

Breakfast was delicious and I can see why they have won awards for it. We helped ourselves to a cereal, fruit, yogurt and juices buffet and had a hot breakfast to follow. The full English breakfast was very good - everything you would expect, including fried bread (but no black pudding). Breakfast was served promptly in the dining room and the service was friendly and warm.

Overall, the B&B has a vintage feel to it but is perfect for those looking for a top-notch breakfast, a central location and a cozy stay in Buxton.

Had a wonderful weekend at this guest house. Everything was above and beyond, Barbara and her staff were lovely. We were offered refreshments upon arrival, then we were shown to our room. Barbara looked so proud as she showed us the room as it was amazing. We had room 3, the ensuite was massive! We had a decanter of sherry, a bowl full of chocolate mini eggs and there was tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The breakfast was delicious everything was cooked perfectly. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Victorian guest house.
