Really enjoyed our meal here on June 21st. Had the Derbyshire Rib Eye Steak. It was excellent. The service was very good. The staff are friendly and pleasant. Would definitely visit again.

“Really nice place: food a bit, er, weird”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Nice relaxed bistro atmosphere. Arrived without a reservation and although nearly full was quickly found the one available table. Starter was a smoked ham hock terrine - two large chunks thereof with a leaf salad on a tired looking wooden palette. It arrived quickly. The salad was falling off the board - it was not suited to serving this dish - and was undressed, though there was an apple relish too. The terrine was excellent, and plentiful, but something was missing - French toast? Finely sliced sourdough? But it was tasty, good meats, send wrapped in some kind of prosciutto - no real complaints here.

For the main I ordered a 9oz rib eye of local provenance, which came with a mustard mash and a vast amount of crudely chopped pancetta and peas, with a non-descript gravy/sauce in a jug. What arrived was a very good looking piece of steak but cooked on the rare side of medium rare. It was a decent cut, perhaps benefitting from a few more days hanging, with quality yellow fat attached. The mash was ever so slightly on the dry side, but only just, and was nonetheless flavoursome. But the whole dish was swamped by the strong smokey, salty pancetta and peas: very strong flavours and way too much of it. I don't crave pig with my steak, and it might be better as an optional side ( it was available as one) or being just a hint. Quality, freshly podded local peas - if they were such - didn't seem obvious. Overall it made the dish a bit of a chore. I was hungry though, and finished it, but not savouring it as I had hoped. Another time I might have sent the steak back and insisted on medium ... All washed down with two substantial glasses (measure deserved bigger glasses, which were over-full) of a reasonably priced quaffable if unspectacular Pinot noir: I'd have been happy to have invested more in something special to go with a good cut of steak but by-the-glass options were limited.

I will return, but might choose a bit more carefully from the menu next time, or speak up to get what I ordered. The overall feel of the place is excellent, and perhaps the pancetta dish is just trying a bit too hard? These chefs need to jump on a train to Manchester and Liverpool to see what they're up against these days: they're on the road but they're not there yet.

“Ambience and good food”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Even on the quiet night we dined at 13, we still felt comfortable in this very warm, slightly rustic bar/restaurant. Very interesting menu. Chose asparagus with pine nuts as a starter and followed with the pork belly. Asparagus still firm and fresh green not soggy as often happens with cooked asparagus. Pork belly is very tasty with zing added by the chorizo pieces mixed with the veg. Very tasty. Very nice, helpful waitress. 13 is a bit away from the tourist centre of Buxton but is very much worth a little extra effort to seek it out. If you like a little food a little different from mainstream, try 13. You will not be disappointed.
