“disappointing stay”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

just come back from a one night stay at Braemar guest house. Upon arriving we had to knock 3 times before the door was answered the owner informed us he was working in the garage he seemed put out that he had been disturbed he was not welcoming. On showing us to our room we were shocked that there was no en suite and the bathroom was along a corridor as we were unaware that this was classed as private facilities, we feel it should be stated that it is not en suite,as we had already paid for the room we had no choice but to stay neither my husband or I had a shower as we were not prepared to bump into other guests en-route wearing our nightclothes. On ordering a cooked breakfast were told by the owner its a big breakfast you had better eat it all. When breakfast was served it looked so unappetizing the bacon was so salty I couldn't eat it, the sausage was of poor quality and smiley faces and fried bread tasted if they had been deep fried I was a little concerned in case I was told off for daring to leave my breakfast. However the room was clean even though the sheets had not been ironed. The young girl serving us at breakfast was lovely. We do feel that £75 was rather expensive for a room with out en-suite facilities, it was also advertised as £60 - £65.

Hello again J.B, and thankyou for your kind words about your stay with us on Saturday night 16th Aug 2014. We thought you were an `Awesome`! couple but we do feel we ought to set the record straight and give the `Trippers` a far more balanced view of the accusations levelled in our direction from yourselves.

We dont have a `Door Knocker` ?? , we have a `Bell` and if guests come well ahead of our official opening time (and the time given to us of their estimated time of arrival) it might come to pass that we may not be here at this early time to welcome anyone. But we very courteously did in this case!

It quite clearly states (and has done for many years) in `Black and White` on our `Availability/Booking` page and also our `Room Description` Page the layout and configuration of all our Rooms/Shower Rooms etc etc, whether they be `En-Suite` or `Private Facilities`, which of course makes it very simple for prospective guests to be 100% sure of exactly what type of room they are booking before they go through the whole process of parting with all their personal information and Debit/Credit Card details etc etc.. (If there is any doubt about a booking we can always be contacted by phone as described on our Website).

With no disrespect to the `reviewer` in this case, if their command of the English language was perhaps a little limited there is a `Translation Button` on our `Home Page` to aid them in any language they may choose to speak before they execute a booking they may find later for some reason to be unsuitable for their particular needs !.

`Braemar` cannot be held responsible for prospective guests who don`t know what they are booking because they fail to read the full information that is set out in front of them !.

Sympathising with the reviewers `oversight` in this case,we would have given them an `En-suite` with pleasure, but every other room was pre-booked for that night.

Also what this `reviewer` has failed to mention? is that due to this fact ,we kindly offered them any `En-suite` room of their choice at a dicounted price on another date to suit them , even though the error was no fault of Braemar`s!. We were rewarded by a negative `Tripadviser` review !!??

One does not want of course , or expect guests to be wandering around the property in their night clothes ( unless sleep walking). The `reviewers` in this case (when checking in) were as a matter of course shown to the wardrobe in their room where warm dressing gowns awaited them for their perhaps short nightly visits to their bathroom etc. Unfortunately ( for the rest of us!) if guests are reluctant to shower , then sadly that is their choice !.

The `Big Breakfast` ( that the owner `Insisted was Eaten`?!). This of course was just the same breakfast that `Braemar` has been serving ( with a few variations) for the past 27 years and has been giving pleasure to guests of all nationalities for all that time. Why change the good old English Breakfast formula when it works so well in conjunction with all the healthy cold buffet selection that we also offer?.

The `reviewer appears to have had a problem with the taste of the `Sausage and Bacon` on their visit?. As most of this produce is purchased from `Chatsworth Farm Shop` , we can only advise taking the `Duke of Devonshire` to task on this one for ( as in the reviewers opinion) he is supplying shoddy and sub-standard sausages and bacon which obviously did not satisfy the reviewers well educated `Taste Buds` etc!!.

Tariff ---£37.50 pppn including cold buffet and full `English Breakfast` with all the trimings etc, for a one ( Saturday night) stayover in Buxton is not an excessive amount to pay for what is offered at `Baemar` , as most guests seem to inform us. Perhaps a `YHA` establishment could be a little cheaper and of more interest to the `reviewer`?.

£60-65 `reviewer has mentioned for a double room ?, our website states quite clearly this is for `single` occupancy in a double en-suite/ private room at the height of the tourist season etc . Another example of not reading the booking info correctly by this reviewer ?????

Thankyou J.B for your kind words about the young girl who served you for breakfast ( our daughter) .

PS, she is also the chief daily `ironer` of all our well cared for `bed linen` and much more, glad you appreciated her!

Kind Regards R&M.

My husband and I decided on a last minute get away to Buxton and after reading the reviews opted for a nights stay at the Braemar Guest House. What a fantastic place! Roger is an absolutely fantastic guy and the entire team at the Braemar can't do enough to help. It's within easy walking distance of the town centre and Roger is on hand to recommend all the good restaurants and local amenities. Our room was very comfortable and very clean, everything you could ask for in a Guest House. The breakfast was amazing with everything from homemade granola to fruit, cereal and a full cooked breakfast. They even have trivial pursuit cards on each table so you can have a mini quiz whilst waiting for your breakfast - we loved it! I wouldn't hesitate to book here again and look forward to our next visit.

Me and my partner stayed at this lovely B'n'B just 10 minutes walk away from the main town and also perfect distance away from the main road so it is nice and quite. Their are lots of walks, shops and cafe's in and around the town center. The room was very clean as well as the bathroom, extremely yummy full english and a selection of cold food. The owners Marie and Rodger where very welcoming and very nice people. We had absolutely no complaints and would defiantly recommend the Braemar to everyone!

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the Braemar at the end of August. Marie and Roger were extremely welcoming and knowledgeable of the local area. The room was decorated and furnished to a very high standard (The room was also very clean!). The breakfast, a choice of hot and cold was lovely and the hospitality was second to none! I would highly recommend this guest house to everyone, as its extremely well priced, set in the beautiful town of Buxton and I can guarantee that you would extremely satisfied with your stay

My partner and I stayed at the start of August and travelled from cornwall. Being from a beautiful part of the country and both working in the hospitality trade we can be hard to please. Braemar surpassed our expectations.

We were attending a family wedding but had a bit of time to see the area as well. Although we didnt meet Marie, Roger was very welcoming and knowledgable of the local area. The young girl who served our breakfast was also lovely and showed an interest in our daily plans.

Our room was clean and serviced everyday. Nothing was too much trouble which was proved when I asked for an iron during breakfast. An iron and ironing board was waiting outside our door when we returned to it.

We have both fallen in love with the peak district and are hoping to return to Braemar when we venture north again. There is so much to see but we didnt have the time to do it all.
