This house is well worth a visit - built as a result of a 'shell' millionaire. Great pictures and a real family feel to the house.eating is good and varied and the gardens are worth seeing

As we arrived late on a lovely summers day we elected to just take the garden tour tickets. At just under £8 each not too bad. Obviously less or free if your an NT member...
To be honest we found it rather disappointing with some areas being poorly maintained or overly modernised when compared with other similar houses in the area (eg Rousham House and Gardens).
The main fruit and flower gardens are in a natural sunken bowl which was interesting but the range of flowers, fruits and vegetables was rather limited and mostly lumped in one large area.
When we visited, there were large numbers of families and children running around and screaming, so not the place if your looking for a tranquil visit.
If your an NT member I'd say its worth a visit but if not then try somewhere else.

I have visited this house many times over the years and it never disappoints. The house and garden still retain the atmosphere of being a home - if on a grand scale. Fantastic pictures and I saw the Shell exhibition for the first time with many original art works which lead to the famous Shell advertising posters "You can depend on Shell"

Well planted gardens and a joy also to see the vegetable garden planted and productive.

We have been members of the National Trrust for 6 years and this is probably one of the best houses and gardens we have seen. I visited Highclere Castle last week which was nice but needs to take note from Upton. Fantasic house, you are able to relax and take in the ambience so easily highly recommended.

Free guides, talks and a lot of information. A good day out. Lots of art, time-preserved kitchens, Very varied garden areas including a good working kitchen garden supplying a pleasant cafe.

Special events some days.

A real find.
