We were invited to lunch for a Ruby wedding lunch on 28 July for around 40 guests and, sadly, our experience on the day was far from the reviews I’ve read here.
On the positive side, the venue and location are really pleasant and every member of the waiting and bar staff we came across were friendly and helpful, service was good considering most of the waiting staff were part timers. No issues at all there.
However, what shocked us, given the reviews here, was the appalling quality of the food we were given. There was a limited choice on the menu (no problem with that) and it should have been so easy to ensure a good standard for a buffet/carvery type menu.
We started off with the pate. It was a hot day – and obviously very hot in the kitchen - because when these starters were served the pate was luke warm and almost melting on the plate – inedible and not a little dangerous I would have thought. Our main course was roast lamb. This was poor quality and not helped by the carver picking a piece of string from my plate with his fingers! We couldn’t decide if the potatoes were supposed to be boiled or roast. Whatever they were they were hard, under cooked and a sad colour. The dessert was apple pie. That was good and the only course we managed to eat and enjoy.
Such a pity. This poor quality really marred what should have been a happy occasion for our hosts. Rye Hill should be ashamed of themselves. One star for the waiting staff and location, zero for everything else.
