Owner description: A moated fortified manor house, about 2 miles west of Banbury. Built in 1300 and then later added to in 1550, the Castle had strong links with the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War (1642-51). Still a family home, Broughton Castle is lived in by Lord & Lady Saye & Sele of the Fiennes family. Beautiful formal garden and park, particularly during the summer months. Public open days will resume from the beginning of April 2017 (2pm - 5pm Wednesdays and Sundays). We are open for group tours at any time of the year by appointment. We have a recently refurbished tea room offering light lunches and delicious afternoon teas,

I visited this place as part of a civil war tour. The lord of the manor(the Fiennes family) took us round, it was great to hear him talk with dry wit and great knowledge about his various ancestors and the times they lived in. You can see interesting paintings, lovely china, a civil war coat and weapons, there is a gorgeous walled garden, and old church with polychromatic tombs, a small café and shop, and toilets

It does have a lived in feeling and presents castle living very comfortably. There is plenty to explore on all 4 floors including the roof for dramatic views. There is a good display of medieval armor. The moat and garden make this a very interesting place to visit as well as the ability to see so much of the house. We felt as if we could live here and move in right now.

Broughton castle, is more of a fortified manor house, but none the less a fascinating place to visit. Somewhere that has that 'lived-in' feeling, and that you to could live there.
Very nice cafe on site, so you can sit and contemplate your surroundings. Even a small walled garden at the rear.
Downside is limited opening times, so you must plan your visit. Also toilets are in the car-park, not near the cafe.
But very minor grumbles.

Well, we managed to avoid the moody granny who met a previous reviewer!! Just as well because she would have had a slice of tongue pie from me if she had started up. ALL the staff we met were really helpful and polite in keeping with the distinguished atmosphere of the house. The whole place is so well kept and interesting that we will visit again. To be honest it is the least well defended "castle" that I have ever seen but that just adds to the attraction. You also get a real good cup of tea which is important for us English. We do not function properly without same. Go and visit you will not be disappointed.

Today me and my husband decided to make a trip up North and happened to pass this beautiful castle, as we approached the inside we were ruddily approached by an old woman who asked 'who we was' and before we even managed to answer her she started moaning to us about how we were not part of a private French group and started verbally attacking us by saying 'what were we?!'. My husband and I apologised so many times for "trespassing her precious grounds" but she continued to show us out through the door. We got asked in a sarcastic tone if we had any computers at home and that we should use them in the future. It's such a shame we encountered such "horrendous" hospitality from the castle keeper, she should definitely consider retiring!
