“Historic and attractive hotel”
Reviewed 1 June 2014 via mobile

From the outside a lovely looking hotel. We thought the inside may be somewhat tired as is so often the case, but not this time. The communal areas are very much in keeping with the hotel's era, think oak panelled walls and higgledy piggledy corridors. We saw 2 rooms , the first a standard twin. A large spacious room and a equally luxurious bathroom. We were then upgraded to a suite when reception realised they has checked us in to a permanent twin room. Just through courtesy, not from a fuss made by us, they called within 5 minutes of us getting to the room so hardly a problem, but they insisted and we obliged! The suite was lovely, separate sleeping, lounge and dressing rooms. Both rooms decorated to a high standard, but not soulless modern, definitely in keeping with the look of the hotel. All the staff we extremely polite and friendly and the breakfast buffet was a great spread which was regularly replenished. Definitely would stay there again

We spent a long weekend at this hotel, the grand building meets you as you arrive. The staff are extremely helpful nothing is too much trouble. Our one negative is that the rooms do need updating especially the bathrooms, ours was very old fashioned wlth signs of black mould and wear and tear. With the exception of updating and painting needed we had a wonderful stay. The location is perfect for days out shopping within walking distance with plenty of pubs and restaurants as easily accesible. We are staying again at this hotel and have paid to upgrade to a better room.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms away from the road.

We stayed for one night and found it all a bit disappointing. It looks impressive when you pull up outside, but sadly on the inside it's a different story. It is in desperate need of a facelift with some of the decor appearing to date from the mid 90s.The historic nature of the building means there are stairs everywhere and no lift. Our room was ok, but the layout meant only one of us could see the TV while lying in bed, the bathroom had seen better days and there was a crack in the sink. The bar had no atmosphere and the furniture didn't match the style of the surroundings. When it gets late, you also have to phone reception to get them to come and pour a drink, as they only have one staff member on duty. We didn't bother with breakfast so can't comment on that. On the plus side, the location is great for the centre of Banbury and the free parking is a bonus. I've given it three stars but it's only just scraped it.

Good weekend stay and we had an upgrade without asking. So we were happy with the upgrade we had to move rooms for a two night stay. But the suites were both very good. One was in the older part of the hotel and quirky. The breakfast was very good staff very pleasant. Very close to town centre. Banbury has a good shopping area with major Hihg Street Names and many local only stores.

Executive rooms were very big with extra large bed loverly modern bathroom or even lounge room with separate bedroom very clean for such a old building. The murder evening was brilliant with the killing game and good food and lots of fun
Breakfast the next morning was excellent . The staff were pleasant
Bar and drinks a little expensive.
The hotel is on Banbury cross short walk to shops about 20 mins from oxford . Free car park at rest

Would stop here again definitely
