“Great eatery”
Reviewed 4 April 2014 via mobile

The best curry house in Banbury, definitely worth a visit. Great food, big portions and lovely staff. Visited multiple times and really can't fault it at all.

“Great curry house”

The food is so tasty & very generous on portion sizes. You will always find a warm welcome when you go to the restaurant by all the staff they are so friendly. A must if eating out in Banbury town centre.

“First visit - will be back”
Reviewed 19 December 2013

We were advised that the portions are big by the owner (?). He wasn't wrong. We had enough left to take-away in a doggie bag for Sunday lunch!
The service was good and the food tasty. I had the chicken chili masala. Big flavour and so much!
The restaurant itself is a little 'old-school' but that's not a problem. The main dishes are perhaps a little more expensive than in other local establishments but the quality and quantity make up for that.
I'll be back.

“Big portions, big taste, small restaurant”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

After trying to visit all the curry joints in Banbury a few years ago, we stumbled across the and initially dismissed the Raj as 'just another one to check off the list'. It turned out that all of us decided that it was the best one in town.

Gentleman John is the old chap who always welcomes you with a smile - he must be about 80 now and still going strong. His dish, the 'John Special' is actually my wife's favourite! There are seats for about 22-26 people in here, which makes it very cosy. A few times we've had group bookings for 8 and it's been no problem.

They serve Kingfisher in nice big bottles which is always good and crisp. Papadums come out swiftly, with chutney, onions and the yellow yoghurty stuff (after eating this in curry houses for 15 years I should probably know what that is...). Lime pickle is available too if you ask.

We very rarely get starters as the portion sizes are very big for the main courses. The menu, like a lot of curry places, is very big with a lot of house specialities. John Special, Chicken Rezala, Chicken & Lamb Korai and Special Mixed Tandoori are some of my favourites. Their rice portions are generous too. One thing to bear in mind is that they do offer to box up the leftovers to take home, which is great. More British places should do this like they do everywhere in America.

The food is always fresh and piping hot and served over the little candle stands things. The naan breads are fresh and moist. The chilli, cheese, onion and garlic one is awesome: sets you up for the rest of the night!

Can't fault this place, and we visit many times a year. Yeah it's small, but that just makes it more different. I'm glad to see they've shunned investing in the fancy neon lights and decor that some are, focusing on keeping high the food quality.

For take always they give you a discount. They do not deliver, which is perhaps the only downside. If you've never tried it, make sure you do. Sure the one next door is cheaper, but you can't compare the meals.
