“could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

stayed here on three occasions first time for a few days then 2 weeks and then a month..while down there with work...food was okay..nothing spectacular...staff...were okay but after being there for a considerable time ...you kind of got the impression that they took you for granted ...rooms stayed in annex at the back and also a attic room ...found them average at best..and really cold...also had to hit the shower at the right time...otherwise the water was lukewarm at best...overall it could be vastly improved....and i personally wouldn't book the place myself as i feel there is better valve elsewhere in the area

We had asked for a 'quiet room' and on learning that there was a wedding reception at the weekend, were able to be transferred to our requirements with no trouble. There has been a change of management and staff since our last visit and it showed. There was a much better air of 'pleasing the customer' than before, the bar, restaurant, and breakfast sevice was excellent. The food in the bar and the Sunday meal in the restaurant were first class, the only hiccup being that we didn't realise that there was no B & B any more and B/fast was extra BUT, looking around at similar offers in the town, excellent value for money because of the first class choices on the menu both as Continental and English breakfasts. Well recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms in the annex can be quieter at weekends! But not near the fire-door end.

Very pleased, booked on-line with reservation for diner @ 8:00pm. Table was ready, staff were very helpful and pleasant. The restaurant was almost full, but the service and food was still very good. Room was clean with all facilities. We both had a good nights sleep. Breakfast on both mornings was great, again staff and food very good. Enjoyed

Double check when you book as assumed wrongly that single meant double bed bedroom for one person - here it means single bed - avoid room 22 its a very strange layout - could not upgrade as hotel was full which is a good sign

Huge ensuite for room 17 and very comfortable bed - Hotel a little tired and some folks had to wait too long to be checked in - Food was good and overall there is something oddly quirky and quaint about this hotel - would stay again but next time ensure its a double room

Room Tip: see note above re single occupancy

Thank you for you review of The Manor. Its lovely to read your comments about the quirkyness of a couple of our rooms. As the buiding was built in the 1730s and has a listed status, there are a couple of rooms that are a little unusual . I totally agree with you regarding the "feel" of the hotel. As the new General Manager i am in total agreement in how the place has a quaint feel to it. Thank you again for the time spent in placing your review.

Oh dear, where to begin...?
Staying in the Annex, the piles of fag ends around the front door and the planters (or were they giant ashtrays?)... The front door which slams shut with an almighty bang.... To room 56, and the heated towel rail which didn't work, the dresser mirror hanging out of its mount, the black mould in the bathroom, the creaking flooring in the corridor, the complete absence of Soundproofing, the ration of two sachets of sugar, only 5 clothes hangers for 2 persons, the paint peeling off the window frames, no sockets next to the beds so charging phones/tablets whilst using them in bed is not an option..... Oh dear.
The small double bed was comfortable enough though.
On to the restaurant. Oh dear. Fish & chips. Nachos. Looking at the menu you realise that there isn't actually anything on it that needs to be cooked by a chef. I asked for a burger and chips on the basis that there wasn't much that could go wrong with it. Oh dear. Catering burgers, from the freezer. Edible. Just. The breakfasts were ok, although if you want more than one pat of butter you need to ask, or to save time, go and get it yourself.
The (very) young staff do their best but there seems to be a complete absence of training. Note, my wife and I are not 'you guys' and my request for more toast is not 'awesome'...
The Management of this establishment was not to be seen, heard, or evidenced. Would we stay again? No chance. It's not that bad, really, and comfortable enough but there are too many niggles to convince you to return. The Management of this establishment is not up to the job, staff training is clearly inadequate and there are maintenance issues.
Like I say, comfortable enough, doesn't cost an arm and a leg, not good enough for me to recommend to friends or family.

Oh dear, we didnt get it right for you did we? Thank you for your comments regarding your stay at The Manor . Please allow me to address some of your issues.

Regarding the pots at the front of The Stables, we have removed these as i couldnt agree more that were being abused as ash trays. We have replaced them with a smart cigarette sand bin and put in a better housekeeping regime to ensure that the area is cleared as much as possible. I have completed a survey of The Stables and we have started work on some of the main maintainance issues. I apologise you found these issues at the time of your stay. Regarding hangers and tea and coffee provision, there is a set standard that we have to work to in room set up that we adhere to. But a call to reception will get as many extras as you need and we are more than happy to supply as many sachets of tea and coffee as you need ,totally free of charge.

Unfortunately when the rooms were originally built there was no need for sockets by the beds for chargers etc. This is a relatively new problem i have also experienced in previous hotels, a problem that has only arisen in the last ten years with the rise of the mobile phone etc. Not an easy problem to correct, but one i will bear in mind.
Our restaurant has a a fairly large menu choice that certainly includes nachos and fish and chips. Steaks, salads are included and some fabulous specials that incude a gamepie that i would thoroughly recommend. Im sorry if your burger was not up to the standard you would expect.
We do have some young team members here, who do use the terms you have described. Not appropriate for everyone i agree. As the new General Manager at The Manor i have addressed this with the team and i believe that they now have a better understanding of their use of language.I apologise if you found this inappropriate.

I am sorry that you found the management to be absent at the time. At anypoint a manager is available to speak with our guests and i apologise if none were obvious to you at the time. As the new General Manager it pains me to hear that you will not be returning to The Manor. I do hope that you will reconsider when visiting the area again. I would be very happy to meet you to discuss your requirements if you do decide to return

We stayed one night and the hotel was very busy with a wedding but the staff bent over backwards to make us welcome. Room and food very adequate for the price and a delightful conservatory area where we had coffee and croissant in the morning. Would certainly return.

Currently no permanent management and the young staff needed help to provide an adequate service. The stairs carpet was badly worn and the housekeeping staff were not thorough in cleaning the bedroom. The Dinner menu was extremely limited and for example Sunday evening supplied Sunday Lunch Roast meat just warmed up.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Refurbished three years ago The Manor is located in the Somerset town of Yeovil with easy access via the A303. An Ideal base if visiting Yeovilton, Sherborne. Built in 1735 by local glover and merchant banker John Daniel, the house was known as Hendford House. After he passed away the house was rented out until 1927 when it became The Manor Hotel. A manor it may not be, but it is certainly elegant enough to be one. Its classical facade and porch are of warm, mellow stone, and to its long single wing, also of stone. It has a cheerful modern bar with scrubbed floorboards and pale beechwood furniture and fittings. Today the hotel is a firm favourite with locals and travellers alike. You will be assured of a very warm welcome and great hospitality. Yeovil is the ideal spot from which to explore Hardy's Wessex. Nearby attractions include Glastonbury Abbey. ... more   less
