We chose this hotel as we wanted to stay in Wallingford and our first choice was full. Next time I will book earlier so I can get a better hotel and save a lot of money!
This was a rather expensive hotel and we were expecting much better. The room had a decent flat screen TV but apart from that was in serious need of refurbishment. The decor was dated and scruffy, with an unpleasant musty smell in the dingy bathroom. I'm sure it's possible to get hot water from the shower (the water from the basin taps was hot) but I was unable to force the temperature control round far enough. The drawers didn't make you want to unpack your clothes into them. There was a foot-long cobweb stretching from the curtain pelmet, and the cushions on the bed were worn.
We had a downstairs room, with a glass wall between the corridor outside and the courtyard. Anyone drinking in the pub at the front of the hotel (and smoking in the courtyard) could see who was going into each room. There didn't appear to be any security at the hotel entrance so solo travellers may be best to ask for an upstairs room.
The breakfast room wasn't particularly inspiring but the breakfast was OK - cereal, dried fruit, yogurt, toast, and cooked breakfast. Presentation was a bit lacking but it tasted fine. There is a car park at the rear that we eventually found on foot, but it was crammed full. We were given a code for the wifi but didn't use it so cannot comment on that. Staff were polite but the few we encountered didn't seem to care much. I couldn't say we felt unwelcome, but didn't feel especially welcome either.
At a lower price it's a hotel I might put up with for the location, but it was really way too expensive for what it is. A shame, because it could be lovely.
