We were recommended to come here by the owner of Thimbles B&B in Heathfield. Excellent recommendation. Delicious food, seemed to be being cooked as we waited.

“Friendly, efficient gastro style pub”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

We booked for lunch today for four of us very much at the last minute. No problem with the booking and we decided on arrival to eat outside on the terrace. They have a set 2 or 3 course menu at reasonable prices and also an a la carte with a good selection of dishes.
The staff were welcoming, efficient and charming. We chose a bottle of red on arrival on the recommendation of the young waitress behind the bar and it was delicious, maybe a little expensive but worth it. The choice on the menu is impressive. I chose to have a chicken liver starter and followed that up with crab linguine, delicious except the chicken livers were over cooked. Others had crispy duck and salmon to start. By and large the food was well cooked and accurately prepared. When I asked for the bill at the bar I was asked if everything was alright. I said it was except for the slightly over cooked chicken livers. There was nothing wrong with them they were just a tad over cooked. The waitress apologised and produced the young trainee chef who also apologised and said he had seen the dish go out and wasn't happy with the way it looked. It's impressive that they took so much trouble to apologise and in fact the bill was reduced slightly. I hadn't asked them to do that. I understand the owner/chef wasn't there at the time although I understand he arrived later. It is rare to fined staff in pubs so proud of their of their reputation that they react that way. We will certainly return and recommend this establishment unreservedly.

“Great Food in a lovely location.”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

We'd had The Hurstwood down on the list for a good while. Especially since we'd seen the chef out on the terrace picking fresh ingredients one evening. Alas each time we remembered at short notice they were fully booked. So this time we booked well ahead. It certainly didn't disappoint the staff are always friendly and the service good. We chose to catch the last of the evening's sunshine on the deck. We had the Tuna, Carpaccio of Beef and the Gnocci which were all good. The Tuna was subtle but beautifully cooked and the Gnocci a revelation. The Carpaccio was great but the beef was generous and could have done with a little more lemon juice and a bit more seasoning to get the balance right. Still very nice dishes, plates all cleared. Everybody opted for the Seabass for their mains which were excellent. We washed it all down with a bottle of Gavi which was a perfect blend. Had it not been midweek and had I not have driven then it would have been more Gavi and onto deserts.

The terrace is very comfortable, as is the interior of the pub. Sheep bleat across the road and I think I even spied a hammock which I'll be back to try out one afternoon. The Hurstwood is a lovely place for a meal and we've only scratched at the menu so we'll be back soon for more.

“Too busy to care!”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

We arrive at 1.45pm on Sunday looking forward to enjoy the summer sunshine in a country environment...... But even though we arrive before the 2pm cut off time for food we were not able to secure a table, even though there were quite a few free, for a meal as the restaurant had closed. Shame on you - we are not a demanding family... A country plough mans and some warm food for the kids, and some chilled drinks would have been all we were looking for :(

“Very nice food”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We went out for an unplanned dinner after work and came across the Hurstwood. We did not realise they did not start food until 7pm so had to wait a few minutes while the menu was printed.

There was lots of choice on the menu. Our food was very nice, it got quite busy later but the service was good and the food was fab. More than we would normally spend when we pop out after work but well worth it.
