We ate here at lunchtime on a Saturday. Having previously been for dinner we had high expectations as that was lovely. However, it wasn't meant to be. The service was good, but my meal (a blue cheese frittata) was tasteless - not enough cheese - and my husband felt quite unwell for 3 days after eating the crab cakes. Whilst we can't be sure that it was these that made him ill, it's a possibility. Either way, we were disappointed. When asked by the waitress if everything was okay, I advised that my meal was fairly tasteless so hopefully this feedback was relayed to the chef. We visit Tavistock regularly but won't be returning to Browns.

We had lunch at Browns with friends who live in the area. My friends had booked the table because they had read good things about Browns ( in the Trenchermans Guide) but unfortunately after dining there we all agreed that overall the experience was rather disappointing and that we would not rush to come back.

We were allocated a comfortable table in the stone-flagged indoor courtyard restaurant which is very nicely furnished but the glass conservatory style roof is VERY noisy when it is raining (which it was that day) and there was also a whirr of an extractor to be heard in the background. Both of these would be less noticeable when the restaurant was busy, but the only other occupied table was vacated pretty soon after our arrival and we spent the rest of the meal in an empty echoing room which was rather dreary.

The menu was limited and rather expensive given that there were things on it like a very overpriced fish and chip dish (which I am sure was very nice but at the end of the day was still only fish and chips). We had three courses with wine and coffee and the food was nicely cooked and well presented but to be honest I felt that given the lack of atmosphere and disengaged staff it was rather expensive for what it was.

Apart from the lack of atmosphere in the restaurant, it was very noticeable that the staff were not bothering to keep an eye on how our meal was progressing. I have always considered that the art of good service discrete but attentive however apart from a quick " is everything OK?" the waiting staff disappeared completely once our food was on the table. We had to search out a member of staff to ask for the dessert menu because nobody seemed to have noticed that we had finished our main course, and after coffee then spent over 15 mins trying unsuccessfully to catch someone's eye in order to ask for the bill . Eventually I gave up , left my seat and went into the main bar area to ask for this but even at that point no apology was given for the lack of attention.

Had dinner here on a Saturday night in October and it was excellent. The service was fantastic from the moment we walked in. We were seated at a great table and had smoked salmon and the crispy beef to start - both amazing. We then had duck and steak which were cooked perfectly and the portion sizes were massive! The atmosphere and decor were second to none and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. You will pay a little more, but it's worth it.

Myself and five friends were on a trip to Tavistock this weekend. We were trying to find somewhere nice to have a full English breakfast but it was quite difficult to find anywhere open in Tavistock on a Sunday morning. We were very pleased to find Browns Brasserie and we read the menu outside the door and it said full breakfast served until 10:30 and as it was only 9:55 we went in expecting to be served. They were quite quiet and there were a couple of tables full but the majority of the restaurant was empty. We waited at the bar area to be seated and after a short wait a waiter/front of house gentlemen came to the bar and we asked if we could be seated for breakfast. He then replied that he could not help us, he couldn't serve us at this time so we had to leave and go without breakfast. The man was very rude and very short with us and he offered no explanation as to why he wouldn't serve us.
