We have dined at Browns for lunch on a couple of occasions and the food and service was excellent. This time we decided to splash out and book an evening meal. Perhaps the Great British Menu connection has gone to their heads, but it was somewhat disappointing. Three courses are £39.50 so you expect a certain level of service. We were shown to our table and then left to watch while several other diners arrived and were served bread and appetizers. Eventually someone recognised our presence and bread and appetizers belatedly arrived. The food was in the main good. However, my wife enquired about the flavourless fine beans that were served cold and with a coating of something white. The waiter promised to investigate but didn't return. At the end of the meal we requested the bill and again the waiter failed to oblige. We had to go to the bar to settle the bill. We had lunch at the Horn of Plenty near Tavistock the following day - 3 courses for £26.50 and food and service were exemplary.

The food was very nice, not a massive choice but good quality but the portions were just too small, especially for the cost.

What a smashing place,
Very charming atmosphere, staff are nice, and service is great. nothing is too much trouble!
Welcoming for a drink by one of the open fires, or eats in the ample dinning room, I thought the covered courtyard was beautiful (even though we had a wobbly table!)
Great food, great wine etc.
Will definately be back soon!

Convenient for shops and some passable pubs. Pleasant layout and menu usually a good choice well done. Service and attention has been hit and miss every time we've been.

We stayed at Browns Hotel in mid August and ate in the restaurant twice. The first was on a Sunday evening and we weren't advised that only the bistro menu was available on Sundays so were a little disappointed. However the second time we are there the food was stunning, beautifully cooked and presented and the best I plate of food I have had in many years. It's not cheap but if you were eating this in a London restaurant you would be paying an awful lot more. Highly recommended.
