Description: We pride ourselves on producing the highest quality food from the finest ingredients - beef, from local herds that has had a minimum of 21 days maturing; lamb and pork also from local farms; fish that is delivered fresh - never frozen - from St Ives daily; marvellous and varied English cheeses from Tavistock and fruit and vegetables from Helston. All our food is prepared and cooked from these fresh ingredients in our kitchen; no bought-in already prepared frozen food is ever used. Our menu and specials are ever changing and offer a wide selection to choose from including a number of vegetarian dishes. On Sunday lunchtimes we have a choice of two roasts (one of which is always sirloin of South Devon beef), steak and kidney pudding, haddock and chips together with a selection of dishes from the specials board.

“Nice location, shame about service”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We went here with friends. Lovely location on the edge of the moors and a bonus as it was a beautiful summers evening so we sat outside for a pre dinner drink. The restaurant had booked our party in for the night before!!!! Their mistake which they admitted to! Anyway, it was sorted and they found us a table. I had for a starter the fish chowder. It tasted ok but it was so watery. It was a good hour before our mains arrived even though we did complain. When they arrived there was no veg even though we had asked the waitress if it came with veg. So another wait for those to arrive. All in all, the food was OK! Nothing stood out that I would want to return. The waiting between courses was ridiculous.

“Spoilt by service”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

We visited The Elephants Nest on a Saturday with a booking for a Family Group of six for lunch. We arrived in good time for the reservation and the pub was still empty. After ordering drinks we were invited to sit down and were presented with menus. We ordered the food fairly quickly and then waited one hour and twenty minutes for the first course to arrive!!! No explanation until we asked after forty minutes, what was going on and then the explanation was that 'One of the meals is cooking slowly'!

When the food did eventually arrive there was one meal short, out of the six, and the waitress explained that the food had been dropped on the floor and they would have to cook that meal again!

To be fair to The Elephants Nest the food was good and the presentation was fine, but the fact that they did absolutely nothing to cover the extended delay did spoil the experience. Surely they could have done something... an 'Amuse bouche', or some crisps, nuts or SOMETHING just to fill the gap!? I have since chatted to various friends about eating at The Elephants Nest and apparently our experience is not at all unusual there. What a shame!

We did speak to the Landlord, who was sitting at the bar, as we left but he was unaware of the problem, even though we were not the only guests complaining of the incredibly slow service.

“Impromptu Sunday lunch surprisingly good”
Reviewed 3 August 2014 via mobile

We called in for a lunchtime drink and was impressed by the young girl serving at the bar and the menu looked good. We both had the garlicky prawns which were so amazing....flavour was superb and the prawns no over cooked as they usually are. My husband had Roast beef which was perfectly cooked roast potatoes crispy and hot. My Sea Bass was so delicate and really very very nice indeed. Not been here before but will definitely come again. The best comment would be in praise of the staff...attentive , polite , and charming.

“One of my favourites....”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

Luckily I live locally to this gem of a pub. The views of Dartmoor are spectacular, from this pretty garden. Always a enthusiastic welcome and the food is consistently of a good quality. I agree with the reviewer who says that the menu needs a bit of an update as us regulars would appreciate a bit more variation but please do not change the Elephants Nest burger as that would border on the criminal!

“Good food and service”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

We visited here after a 3 hr Dartmoor walk, feeling hot, sticky and sweaty. This was was a very positive experience. really good food (for pesceterians). well presented. Excellent bar staff, working very hard to welcome people. The beer was really excellent (CAMRA member) and it was all nicely done. Not very expensive but a challenge to drive to.
