“Great quirky pub”
Reviewed 23 July 2012

Stopped off for a quick drink on our walk back from Tavistock, it was nearly 3pm and they were due to close, but we were made to feel most welcome. The ceiling is covered in beer mats so you spend your time looking upwards...!!! We didn't eat, the menu on the blackboard looked very tempting and reasonably priced. Will definately return when in the area.

“Not the best”
Reviewed 27 April 2012

Ok pub, bit dingy and need a makeover. Food on first night was ok but on going back another night it was terrible. two members of our party had the meat pie, the pastry top was not so much cooked as welded on and uneatable, other meals were average. Unfortunately there are other pubs in the vicinity which do it so much better.

“Traditional pub with a good but limited menu”
Reviewed 22 April 2012

The Trout and tipple is a traditional pub which serves meals in the pub area as well as a restaurant area. We sat in the pub area on a cold wet night the roaring fire inthe hearth was very welcome. The staff are friendly and helpful.
The menu whilst not extensive covered all the usual pub fare bases, there were aslo 3 or 4 specials. The menu is on a chalk board at the back of the pub, which meant a bit of squinting over other peoples shoulders, we created a bit of banter which was fine for us but I could see other people may not like that.

We started with creamy garlic mushrooms and baked camembert which were both good.I had the steak and ale pie (cooked in house by the chef) the gravy was fab as was the pastry, my husband had a burger which looked good and tasted better. No room for pudding!

Overall I would say this is a great little pub and whilst the choice of food is limited, we found there was something for everyone on the menu and the limited choice was better than some of the other places we went to that that had pages of choice but nothing is fresh.

One improvement is that it could look more open, every time we went past it wasn't very clear if it was open or closed.

“Not somewhere that people eat twice!”
Reviewed 19 March 2012

Have seen this place a couple of times on the way past but it sneaks up on you so is passed before one can stop. Managed to remember where it was and stopped this time to try it out since the two other places that we had tried (being sunday) were full.

It didnt look good from the off to be honest. No menu just chalk boards. Wife went for the safe option of a jacket spud because she was under the impression that it is pretty hard to get wrong but ended up being sadly mistaken.

The staff were friendly but the food is not good at all.

Not much point pulling the meals apart but I would say that the syrup sponge pudding is a 100% miss. They over nuked the 2 that we had to the point that they had burnt black centers.

There is an obvious reason that this place is one of the very few around devon that is empty on a Sunday - I should have known better when it was even empty on mothers day!

“Quality real ales & food”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

You enter into the bar area, which is a tradition quaint old fashioned bar, which is a bit dark, but has a nice open fire, but you can then either go into a small outside garden area or into the new restaurant area, which is nice and bright.

A good selection of freah cooked and reasonably priced food plus a nice choice of real ales (5 when we visited) to select from.

Atmosphere was friendly and the staff where very helpfull. Its not an absolute amazing pub but it is just a great tradition type of pub with good honest food. The pub is also child friendly
