“Wonderful wedding venue”
Reviewed 15 June 2013

When we decided to get married we emailed every venue we could find within an hour of our home in Plymouth, and from the off the Bedford stood out. Their events team were really friendly and helpful and within a few minutes of walking into the hotel to meet with them to discuss their package we had both decided it was the perfect venue for our day. Cosy and intimate, whilst retaining a feeling of space and light we fell for both the Woburn room for our ceremony, and the Gallery for our reception. The benefit of having more than enough rooms at a reasonable rate to sleep any of our guests who chose to stay, whilst being within an easy distance of many lovely B&Bs for those who wanted to be away from all the wedding bustle. Tavistock is such a beautiful town many of our guests who had never been before fell in love with it and intend to return on future trips to the West Country.
The staff were friendly and approachable, and always on hand during the planning stages to answer silly questions or to set our minds at ease. The list of suggested suppliers that they gave us also proved invaluable.
We decided to make a weekend of it so booked dinner for 30 on the Friday before the wedding to allow both sides of the family to mingle, meaning everyone was a lot more relaxed come the big day.
The food was AMAZING. We had a bespoke menu for both the Friday night and the Wedding breakfast. Everyone commented on how lovely the food was, and even the most difficult of dietary requirements were handled without complaint. We were even able to offer our guests a choice of wedding breakfast meal at no extra charge.
When we first viewed the hotel we thought the garden may be a little on the small side for photographs if the weather was nice, but it was actually more than enough space. We also loved the fact that there were many different areas, both in terms of light, space and decor, that if the weather wasn't favourable (quite likely in the UK) we would still be able to capture lots of wonderful photographs. As it was the weather was great and we spent a great deal of time outside.
The bridal suite was also lovely. Added to this the fantastic deal that the Bedford was offering made it £4500 cheaper than the equivalent package at the nearest rival!
We would thoroughly recommend holding your wedding at the Bedford hotel, and if we had to do it all again, we would likely do it there.

This Hotel looks like a charming old palace from the outside and from the inside. I walked in on a Sunday afternoon and asked if they had a single room for one night. They did. Not only did they have a room, but they even gave it to me for 45 instead of 70 pounds Sterling, which I accepted, even though I had not even asked for it. So far so good. The smiling receptionist checked me in and explained the WiFi system, after which a waiter showed me up to room 36 on the topfloor. As he had arrived himself the very same day, he did not really know where to go. Having climbed a number of steep stairs, I was shown into a nice small room facing the back of the building. Since the old French window only opened a quarter after having managed to push it up a little, I could hardly get any fresh air into the sticky room. When I decided to take a hot shower after a long trip, the water remained cold even though I had let it run for some 5 minutes. I thus called the front desk and they recommended to let it run another 5 minutes, since I had a room at the top. Much to my surprise it finally did work.
Other than that, everything else in the room functioned perfectly well such as TV, phone and WiFi. There was no minibar or in-room safe though. Both the bedroom and the bathroom were very clean. However, the bed was a little too soft for my taste. The interior of the hotel in spite of its age is well maintained and in good shape. Upon my request room service sent up a nice meal and a good bottle of French red wine within 20 minutes to my room. The following morning the breakfast was served downstairs in the restaurant. The fruit juices were all tinned and the scrambled eggs without taste. The bacon was not crispy enough, I thought. I would have expected to find some porridge in an old fashioned English hotel like this one. However, they don’t seem to do that anymore in this country. On the whole breakfast was a little too medíocre for a place like this, in spite of the beautiful heavy cutlery they lay on to impress you. I must compliment the front office staff and the waiters for their being smiling, attentive, polite and efficient at all times. All in all a pleasant but unexpected surprise for a walk-in guest at the beginning of the summer season .

Room Tip: If you go during the summer make sure to get a room where the window opens all the way to get some a...

Eleven friends stayed at the Bedford hotel for two nights, dinner B & B. The hotel has ample space downstairs for guests to sit comfortably and chat. Our first night's dinner was in the private 'Tavistock' room, which had been attractively arranged. On the second night we dined at the sister hotel at "Two Bridges". Both meals were excellent and the service was friendly and efficient at all times. I had booked the reunion several months beforehand and the staff were always helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

We arrived on a Friday evening after work as we only live about 30 mins away. Plenty of free parking and a lovely old charming hotel in a great setting. After being checked in by the friendly chap on reception we made our way to our room. No 34 was at the front of the hotel overlooking the church with dual aspect windows. Nicely furnished room with tea & coffee making facilities. Nice light bathroom with shower over bath and plenty of towels warming on the rail. We decided to eat outside of the hotel and found an Indian nearby which was cheaper and had a better selection for a vegetarian.
There was a bit of noise late in the evening from people sat outside a bar along the road from our room but when it closed at a reasonable time, this stopped. The shower looked good but the water pressure was rubbish and the TV was small and the remote was a bit dodgy.
Breakfast was self serve cereal, juice etc. Had toast, tea and a very nice cooked breakfast brought to the table.
After checking out we were able to leave our car in the car park to go for a wander. Tavistock is a lovely place and that morning there was a farmers market, craft fayre and pannier market to explore. There are also lots of individual shops and cafes, the place was buzzing!
Overall a lovely old hotel in a lovely spot at a good price (last min deal)

Attended and stayed for family wedding all held at the hotel. Whole experience was good. Food was very good. Staff (all of them)were very pleasant. Town has a lot of history and a very good market and I am sure a lot more places of interest than we could see over a weekend.

Room Tip: No pool, above mark was in error

The hotel is very tired and in desperate need of refurbishing. Such a shame as it is in the best position in Tavistock with good parking. Staff were mostly pleasant ( not all ) but the breakfast was poor. Does any other hotel serve tinned fruit today ? Scrambled eggs lumpy, this is basic cooking.
This hotel needs sorting out !

We stayed here for 2 nights in April 2013 and felt the hotel was overpriced for what we received. The room was pleasant enough, with a four-poster bed and looked like it had been recently redecorated. But at £140 a night it did not have that luxury feel we were expecting. This was especially true with the bathroom, which looked like it too have been fairly recently redone, but was let down with the finish - the workmen had certainly not done a good job with the finishing touches, with peeling paint as an example. Also the bathroom was plagued with lots of little flies. The staff did try to help by leaving us with a fly spray, but this sort of thing should be sorted out before releasing the room. Having said that, we found the staff really helpful, from those on reception to those in the dining areas. If we had paid anything between £90 to £120, I expect I would have written a review saying how happy we were, but for the additional price we expected something better. Will probably not return.
