We were looking forward to coming for a night - my wife had been before for lunch and said it was excellent. Warm welcome and good beer but really poor food (don't think this is normal as everyone else's seemed to be fine) led me to complain. Reaction was that as I had eaten some (2 bites - enough to confirm it was as bad as it looked) I could not have any form of replacement unless I paid for another meal. Dog in the bar was on the scrounge straight away. This was not the way I expected an establishment of this repute to behave and it spoiled the evening, frankly. Rooms were nice, though bed far too soft for us (sort of collapsed) and the dog, having taken a break from scrounging at the tables, took up periodic barking to keep us awake for a while. Room could do with a better clean, and a waste bin in the room would have been good. Breakfast was excellent. Won't hurry back though - a shame.

Room Tip: Ask for one that is not above the kitchen.

Many thanks again! It is a lovely place to get away from it all, we came with one son in May who said it was the best pub food ever so had to come again with both sons & a friend in November! The rooms are spacious with lovely bathrooms, superbly comfortable beds with quality down duvets and pillows. It is great having fresh milk in the fridge in the room, large towels and towelling robes.
Breakfast is super with fresh fruit including mango, strawberries and blueberries followed by a wide cooked choice.
Now planning a summer stay and will be in touch soon.

Room Tip: Garden room brilliant, room above it lovely.

We stopped here for lunch on the spur of the moment, the food was ok and served promptly the beer was good and the centre of attention was the pub dog who was a sweaty.
Atmosphere was good and the tables large enough for eating and drinking. The pub also sported an eclectic range of decoration.
Mind the Elephants on the carpet!

We live in West Cornwall and regularly travel up the A30 to London or the North and discovered this whilst looking for Sunday lunch en-route (it's a 10~15mile deviation). It was amazing, I will now make any excuse to drive this way to sample the suet Steak and Kidney pudding which is the best I've tasted (better than Rules in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden). Worth seeking out.

We have stayed several times at the Elephants Nest. It is a such a find - the setting is simply beautiful, the food is great and the welcome from Hugh and Denise always special. As others have said the breakfasts are superb (I like the Haddock and poached egg too).

This is also a truely dog friendly place and our dogs enjoy the holiday as much as we do - they also enjoy the biscuits that Hugh gives them.

We will definitely come again - and have recommended the place to several others who all enjoyed their stay.

Room Tip: We had the ground floor room with a patio - lovely. But won't recommend it in case everyone else...

Thanks Hugh and Denise, we had a great time staying with you and as you know we are trying to work out out next visit with the rest of our family and take over all 3 rooms..

The room was outstanding, nice bed, great bathroom and good idea to have a fridge.. As for the views from the room you can not get any better..

Food was second to none, we stayed on a very busy Friday night and our food was outstanding.. try the braised ox cheeks...........so good.

Then the next day Hugh cooked us breakfast which was even better I had the full english all local meat and my wife had scallops and bacon....mouth watering pleanty of scallops and bacon I wished I had the same...

Never mind I will next time as we will be back.....

Thank you both and all your staff

We arrived here at 4 o'clock to find the pub all locked up and the gates closed. We wandered round and eventually got someone's attention - the landlady showed us our room but fairly firmly told us that the pub didn't open until 6!!
We had the biggest of the three rooms and it was lovely. All clean and white with a big bed (2 singles pushed together).
There a some nice attentions to detail in the room - bathrobes and a light in the wardrobe (although oddly not in the fridge). Problem being that the toilet seat gets wet whenever you use the shower.
As a pub, it is a proper village pub with the cricketers coming in for a beer after a local game which we could see out of our bedroom window. The menu looked lovely but we thought they were stretching themselves a bit as the quality of the food wasn't as good as it could have been (steak and pork escalope were ok but not great).
In the morning we were met by the landlord and he served us with a lovely breakfast.
Overall it was not a great welcome but was a relaxing stopover.
