A great location and lovely hotel spoilt by poor service in the restaurant and bar; the menu was unremarkable and limited, with restaurant staff rushing service of an average dinner. The bar staff are better with standard drinks, don't ask for anything that needs mixing!

I have stayed several times before and not had a bad word to say; maybe the hotel has had to get extra seasonal staff in for the main holiday weeks who haven't been trained to their normal standard.

As good as you can get for English seaside hotels, very slylish, brilliant location with very luxuriously appointed rooms. Restaurant has a good varied menu, definitely high end but worth worth a visit even if not staying there. The walk along the coast has terrific views and there are all the facilities of Salcome not too far away. No swimming pool, but the sea is on your doorstep.

If you want a budget hotel do not book this one as everything about it oozes expensive. As soon as you step inside you know your wallet is going to be empty when you leave. Obviously they feel they can charge silly london money because of where they are located on the estuary overlooking the sea right on a beach. The hotel is a smal boutique type with very high quality fittings with nice clean rooms.
All the staff are friendly and very keen to please. There is a hotel car park as you will need a car because of the location being remote.
The food was good but the menu was the same every evening and we thought it was a shame there were no specials on the menu because everyone likes to think they have value for money these days.
There is no lift so this hotel doesn't lend it self for disabled or the elderly but there is a fantastic staircase if you are fit and well to climb.
We will return but we need to save up for some time before we do.as we work in a rural location not in London..

Room Tip: mention when booking that you are disabled or elderly so that they can allocate a room that is more...

We stayed for two nights with our 10 week old son and made great use of the stunning location, with drinks on the terrace overlooking the estuary and a lovely dinner looking out to sea. Great seafood on the menu as you'd expect. Staff were very friendly and eager to please - much appreciated with a small baby. Rooms are ultra clean and stylish if a little on the small side. The tractor to the south sands ferry which takes you to salcombe itself is fun - it would be good if this was advertised a bit more at reception. It's pricy but worth it for a treat though would be worth including items like travel cots in the price. Local restaurant the winking prawn - a steep 10 min walk away -well worth a visit.

We've been going to South Sands since this New England style hotel re-opened a few years ago. Highly recommend. Just needs a little maintenance and refresh in some areas, such as bathrooms around the edges & corners.

Short review to concur with several recent postings. We ate as a family at South Sands in July. Things started well when we discovered Salcombe as basically zero taxi service. If you are in town and need to get to the South Sands you need to have Pre-booked or you'll be stuck. Having rung to tell them to cancel our table cos of a lack of transport, unless they would hold the table for 30 minutes while we changed into shorts and made the trip in a Rib (we we on a boat in the harbour), they agreed that was fine and said to take our time.

We found out why when we got there. It was Saturday night, the weather was fabulous, it was July, Salcombe was busy and yet most of the tables were empty.

30 minutes after we sat down we still had not received our drinks, we had to make a mild fuss to get them. We suspect they had not been ordered by our waiter, who spent 10 minutes at a time chatting with tables of guests outside who were just drinking, ignoring the tables of diners inside.

The night was partially rescued by a young lady waitress who was friendly, but seemed to be making up for the other staff, of whom there were lots, goodness only knows what they we doing.

Oh, yes, the food.

One dish was sent back as it was too salty to eat, one was dull but edible, the rest OK'ish but well short of what you'd expect for the prices.

Will not now return until / unless the Tripadvisor reviews start saying 'you won't believe how much this place has improved since the dark days of 2013'. South Sands you have you challenge - get yourselves an unbroken run of 4 and 5 stars on TA!

We left Surrey and arrived at The South Sands hotel in salcombe Devon at 8 am . The car parking at this hotel is secure roomy and right next to the hotel and was protected by a key pad barrier .
The hotel is very smart and chic with a sailing theme , it is clean and managed very well .
We opted for room J10 and believe me ! We were very happy with our choice , the view was magnificent as was the decor and functionality of the room .
This was the first holiday with our 14 month year old boy Charlie and he was looked after very well .The only very small criticism was that we had a room service meal of Lobster that was fantastic however the tray wasn't cleared away after the room was cleaned in the morning and a call had to be made to collect it , petty but at £350 a night it surprised us .
Overall the holiday and hotel we fantastic and salcombe is beautiful .

Room Tip: J10 room is a must
