“Great location for a family holiday at Salcombe”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

We love Salcombe and have been to the hotel a couple of times now. The hotel is located right on the beach. Lanes to the hotel when it's busy with lots of traffic and be a bit of a hassle. Rooms and Suites are clean and modern. Service at the restaurant can be slow. Prices are a bit expensive for what it is but we'll probably go back to this hotel if we are visiting Salcombe.

Had one of the best evening meals ever at South Sands Hotel. The Pork was just divine & the service perfect! So good, that we booked in again for breakfast a few days later. Just ordinary & overcooked

We've recently spent some time down at Salcome and after an autumn day on the beech we went in to the hotel for some food and drinks. Sadly the food wasn't brilliant, considering the price your paying, the service was good with very attentive waiters and waitresses. We would possibly stay here in the future as it is in a lovely spot but would have to go elsewhere to eat unless they've upped their game on the food side.

Hotel is in a beautiful location but really does need to up its game and lower it's prices in relation to food and drink. My first experience was an evening meal in the year the hotel re-opened. At that time the service ws poor and the food so bad we said we wouldn't return. At that time we did complain that the main sea bream course was tiny and the belly pork dish inedible, just three large pieces of dry meat with a tiny saucer of chopped apple with cinnamon sprinkled on it. No sauce or anything. The manager was good enough to reduce the bill but we told ourselves we wouldn't return.
However whilst on the beach recently in glorious autumn sun the balcony view "called" us to sit on it with a drink! I couldn't believe two drinks namely a g&t and a pint of fruit cider plus one portion of chips was £14.00. Even for Salcombe this is pricy. Then when the chips arrived the portion was in a bowl the size of a sugar basin or cappuccino cup without the handle! Tiny. Plus it had been smothered in salt. I had to send it back as I do not eat salt on my chips and my husband is perfectly capable of putting his own on. When paying so much you are entitled to get what you want? The waitress was most shirty when we Asked for it to be replaced with a salt free portion.
Why put salt on when not everyone wants it?
Therefore even though the view is fab and the chairs on the balcony overlooking the beach very comfortable we will now definitely not return and cannot understand how so many people say the food etc is good. Great location, poor food, ridiculously expensive. Shame

our first trip to south sands! the setting is idyllic and the accommodation is comfortable luxury. unfortunately we did not have a sea view which would have been lovely but it did not spoil our stay! the location is as such that if you want to explore Devon you are soon out and about, leaving your little bit of heaven to come back to later. We took our dog with which made our holiday break complete. I don't think I'd visit in the height of season but for an autumn break it was perfect, we were very lucky with the weather!!

Room Tip: try and get a sea view!! But don't let it stop you if you can't!!

This is a little corner of paradise , it would be hard to find a more tranquil beach hotel in the UK, the sea literally laps up to the terrace and at night , all we could hear were waves rolling along the shore -bliss. Its worth paying more for an amazing Dragon room with breath taking sea views and the best bathroom ever, roll top luxe and power shower.
Interiors are pure Cape Cod, food has the unmistakable Mitch Tonks flair, fab fish, the best squid in batter we've ever tasted, a far cry from those chewy spare tyres you often get. The wine list is sophisticated and staff stylish, and atmosphere a bit clubby, very grown up preppy as it is quite expensive. But the most essential accessory seems to be a dog, we were just about the only couple without one! Think Ralph Lauren meets Martha Stewart, we LOVED it and can't wait to return. But be warned , the roads to approach are hairy. We parked up for three days and took the ferry into Salcombe(next door) or walked everywhere , UPHILL earning our delicious Devon cream tea. The steep roads are not for the fair hearted. If you love a quiet bolt hole, laid back luxe, fab fish and fresh sea air , you will love South Sands

Room Tip: Worth paying more for a sea view

Location is fantastic, right on the beach. Reception staff were lovely, very welcoming and helpful. We had help to our room with the luggage and a guide to all the facilities. We took our dogs with us; dog beds and bowls were provided. We had one of the entry rooms, we wanted a larger room but they were booked but we were pleasantly surprised with the room. King size bed, comfy linen and pillows, double wardrobe, fridge, coffee/tea facilities, hair dryer, laundry facility, roll top bath, double shower, Molton brown toiletries. Everything you'd expect. A really relaxing and comfortable stay.
The area the hotel has some work to do is in the bar and restaurant. Breakfast is buffet and really good quality ingredients where it lets itself down is the hot buffet, nothing seems to be cooked properly all a bit anaemic, for the price you pay for B&B it should be cooked to order.
Evening meal - we waited 20 mins for drinks, asked for menus twice, offered bread and table water which didn't arrive and had to ask twice for these, they finally arrived after the starters. The menu is a very simple, possibly too simple for the price. When you read about the head chef you expect something special, instead the chips are frozen and the salad is straight out of a bag. Wine list is impressive but again, expensive, you can experience just as nice wine and champagne for half the money in other restaurants. It's a shame really because all the ingredients are there for it to be amazing, but there are better, more tasty restaurant locally.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay, the location, the welcome, the rooms and the hospitality of most staff. It just needs to sort out the Achilles heel -the restaurant and it will be just perfect.
