This was the first stay however I have had lunch in restaurant a couple of years ago. The room (19) was good as was the bathroom however the shower could do with a hand held attachment the underfloor heating was a bit hit and miss, but great view and you can lay in bed and hear the sea. The room was not cleaned on one of the days and we were told the staff had gone home! We stayed 3 nights eat in the restaurant on twice the menu was ok and the food just ok, we decided to eat out on the third night which was good as the restaurants was closed for a group booking. The breakfast was good on two mornings however the day after the group booking the breakfast was a buffet it was cold and tasteless which was sad.

Room Tip: Sea view is a must or you will be looking at a car park room19 great

This was my 4 visit to South sands, but something has changed. It still looks the same but some small details have been missed, heating not working in room, safe not working, dog barking and wet smelly dog in lounge. Finally.. how do you wash your hair without showering in this hotel? (fixed shower head and staticshower screen), I suggested to the receptionist, maybe keep a portable shower hose which attaches to the bath taps. She just smiled at me like i was CRAZY! Although, the bar waiter and restaurant waiter were so friendly that made the difference, South sands Hotel - , if you are listening, please make your customer comments matter, and look after the good staff or they will be snapped up along with your customers by the new Salcombe Harbour Hotel.

We have stayed here several times on both business and pleasure but something is going wrong with the South Sands Hotel and standards are definitely starting to slip and craks are staring to appear.

We were given our room which was nicely made and clean as normal and found the previous guests feedback card was left in our room with their full names, address, telephone No. Email address etc, not good if picked up by a fraudster. We could also hear a dog barking in a room opposite which was not something we expected to hear in a 4* Hotel. When we went to go down for dinner and put our valuables, laptops etc in the safe, it was already locked. The receptionist tried to getting it working but no joy and went to find an engineer and before she left we mentioned the last guest's feedback card had not been collected and it was instantly blamed on the cleaner working on their own and being rushed. We gave the receptionist the card which was left on top of the safe.....15 minutes later, with no return from the receptionist we bagged up our belongings and took them to dinner and were advised on the way out that she could not get hold of the engineer.

We were eventually given another room (15) which was fine, away from the barking dog and with working safe. However, the mattress was very very hard and the pillows were flat and felt old and worn with no support at all, even when folded in half they were useless. The duvet appeared to be far too small for the duvet cover and felt like cardboard where it was presumably starched. The heating was not working either, whichever way we moved the dial, no light came on and nothing happened, so we had a cold, uncomfortable night of barely any sleep with aching joints come the morning (We are in our late 30's)

When we checked out, we tried to mention the card, uncomfortable mattress, Pillows, heating not working etc, but were cut short and told that "Mrs. XXXX was quite happy with the room the previous week" etc etc. and we were made to feel like it was our problem, not theirs and that was that.

Here's the thing South Sands. Firstly, if a customer complains, don't blame the cleaner or anyone else, just accept responsibility and sort it out. Secondly, listen to what we, as guests have to say, as without any guests, your hotel will not survive. Thirdly, we are not Mrs. XXXX, we are returning customers who have spent a lot of money with you and know when something is not right.

If you had listened to us in the first place, we would not have felt the need to review your business on Trip Advisor. You have lost our future custom.

Such a shame, this is our third visit, where has it all gone wrong? if anything with another hotel open in Salcombe, they should be upping their game.
My main gripe is the poor restaurant choice, like other reviews, set menu only has choice of two items, stayed 4 nights and got sick of seeing parsnip bloody soup!! main course was cottage pie - if I wanted cottage pie I would have stayed at home and not gone to a four star establishment. When I "moaned" and cancelled my dinner reservation, I was given the strong impression, that my gripe did not matter and I could take my business elsewhere, this I did!!
The regular menu, has fish, fish and more fish, if like me you are not a big fan of fish, the only other choice is one over priced beef dish, small portion, served lukewarm and overpriced, beware of the discretionary service charge of 10% and includes 10% on your drinks. Charged £3.50 for "basket of bread" this equated to 3 half slices of toasted bread served on a side plate.

Avoid bedroom 5, cold - so called eco friendly heating, just doesn't keep you warm, every time the automatic front door opens, the whole hotel feels the breeze of cold air. Room was not hovered every day and sheets looked like they needed an iron.

One and only good point -Candy in the restaurant deserves great compliments, as do some of the other staff, I think were also embarrassed by the lack of choice and ability of the management of chef to make urgently needed changes.

Next stay the newly opened hotel, sorry South Sands you have lost my trade and confidence

Room Tip: Avoid room 5, noisey!! and cold

We booked a two night stay through Secret Escapes which included the two nights accommodation, breakfast on both mornings and a free meal in the restaurant on one of the evenings of our choice. On arrival at the restaurant we were given menu's which were decent but when we advised that we were booked through Secret Escapes they took those menu's away and gave us an A4 sheet of paper which had on it two starters, one of which was Parsnip soup and two mains which were Belly Pork or Sardines. These were not what we had expected so we chose from the main menu. We had two starters, two mains and a bottle of white wine which came to over £95. They discounted £15.95 each as the allocated price allowed for the revised menu then added a 10% service charge and VAT which left us with a final bill of £75, not good as we were expecting a free meal. I suspect this was designed to get us into the restaurant, offer us a sub standard meal that we clearly wouldn't accept and then sting us to the tune of £75. Had we known of this we wouldn't have even turned up for the free meal. BEWARE
