“Oh dear, the feeble cheeses and the hairy chicken doorstep”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2012

On a busy summer day we chose this pub from 3 we perused, and based too on TA feedback, but we erred. I picked a simple cheese and bread and chutney dish, but the sliced bread was average (no French baguette here) and only one of the 3 cheeses had any flavour. And as for my partner’s chicken and salad, well the slab of chicken could have soled a shoe, tasteless and.. look there’s a hair in it! Human? Looks like it. Cant win them all.

Dear William E

Oh dear - I think you really must be talking about the wrong pub................... I'm ever so sorry but you talk about bread and three cheeses - we do a semi open grated cheese sandwich?? Thats made with a gorgeous chunky flavoured West Country Cheddar. As for a Chicken salad - thats always hot Chicken and nevewr, ever a complaint. Nothing you have said matches anything we have................

Warmest wishes and I ope you'll visit OUR pub very soon,

“Sneaky find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2012

The pub looks like any other pub from the front but the surprise is the garden at the back so nice and a sun trap. The beer and the food were great value for money and the bar staff really friendly.

“Great to be back”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2012

We have visited this pub every year for many years now and I agree with another reviewer who stated that this is the best it's ever been. It's a very popular pub for drinking and eating. The staff are friendly, helpful and professional, the beer is good and so is the food. One of the secrets of the current sucess is the landlady's (Liz) energy, enthusiasm and ability to take on board suggestions. The quality of the food is good and reasonably priced for Salcombe. There has been a small children's menu introduced which has been good and the specials board is impressive, showcasing a number of local fish dishes. There s also a daily special curry, usually chicken. They do not serve much rice with the curry, but with the amount of meat that comes in the serving, this is really not a problem. The mussels are wonderful, the burgers good quality as is the steak and a variety of other dishes my party tried. I have just one teeny, tiny crtiticism in that the main menu is on the small side (not a problem in itself) and is the same for both lunch and evening meaning that if you intend eating there more than once you begin to struggle for choice. I know it's got a small kitchen and the chef does a wonderful job, but the introduction of a few more snacky lunchtime dishes such as whitebait or a local pasty might just broaden the scope for repeated lunchtime visits. Outside of that the food, beer, Rattler and welcome are superb, The beer garden is wonderful with thoughtful touches such as Liz providing fleece blankets to snuggle in if the day becomes a little chilled, It's a pity that the top dining room seesm to rarely be open given the space and the superb views from it. Liz is extremely helpful and very involved in the front of house (not something you see much of these days), Tim keeps a good cellar and the bar and waiting staff are superb (particularly Glo). Look forward to seeing you all again next time we are in Salcombe.

Dear Baszunia
Thank you for your review. Its particularly a pleasure to receive feedback when its so well though out and so thoroughly complimentary as yours is.
We certainly feel that this year has been the best year for us. Not only in numbers we've fed but in terms of the menu being right and the feedback so complimentary as it has been.
In terms of the size of the menu we try to be as varied as we can be but in the summer we have to keep it a pretty standardised menu just because of the numbers of people we are now seeing - having said that, we have rotated the specials every day, sometimes twice a day.
From next week we go back to a menu that will now rotate once a month at the very least and at least 6 changing specials - so I hope that choice and the added inclusion of Pasty and chips at lunchtime will be suitable for our customers.
We look forward to welcoming you back again
warmest wishes

“Nice way to wind down”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2012

Sat in the pub a couple of hours waiting for the rain to stop, then came back another day to soak up the sun in the beer garden. Good service, beers and cider, Our friends dined and the food looked good. Definately worth a visit.
Pint of Rattler please!
