Description: The Victoria Inn has been run by Tim & Liz Hore since 2008. We pride ourselves on being a 'Traditional Pub, with Traditional Values'. It has this year (2014) been awarded the Taste of the West Gold Award - awarded for locality of produce used, ambiance and high standards of service. We are the only pub in the South Hams to hold this prestigious award. National finalists In Licensee of the Year, finalists in Devon Life Family Friendly Dining Establishment as well as previous Fish & Chip award finalists. We welcome children with their own menu selection of home cooked food and dogs with their own Al a Bark menu! Bookings to eat with us are advised as we get extremely busy and hate to disappoint customers.

“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

While the tale end of hurricane Bertha blew through I was stuck in Salcombe with my boat. After a quick recce. of the three pubs chose this one to eat in, What a pleasant surprise, the place was clean and in good order, the staff were attentive including the Landlady who worked her way around the tables with the odd word to her staff. The food overall was excellent, Hake first nite, Battered Monkfish second nite not quite as good. Good choice of real ales and wine. Whilst under present ownership would definitely recommend.

“There's some creative brains at work here!”
Reviewed 14 August 2014 via mobile

Walked in for lunch and the place immediately felt right. We went up the stairs just to the left of the entrance into the garden which, considering the size of Salcombe, is huge! Orders are taken downstairs at the relatively small bar and considering it was tourist season, expect a bit of a crowd. The wait is well worth it however, the Ham Ploughman we ordered was absolutely stunning so much so that we asked where the ham came from. The wonderfully friendly staff informed us they make all of it themselves. At around about 15:00 o'clock the garden started filling up with strollers for what turned out to be story telling time. Well away from the patio on a small lawn a man in a safari suit would do his thing for the small people whilst mums and dads consumed at leisure.
The creativity came in all sorts of ways, spectacles on the bar with a note saying "use ours if you forgot yours", doggy blankets, and baskets of games. Have a read through all the notes posted behind the bar. A great place with the right atmosphere, service and style! Loved it!

Dear RobertM

I can't tell you what a boost this review has given all of us!! We are roughly mid-season and we are as busy as ever - seemingly running round 24 hours a day trying to fulfill the needs of so many guests. Therefore to receive a review like this has really lifted all of us and our tired legs and heads!

We're delighted you enjoyed your visit and thank you so much for acknowledging the things we do that make us so succesful. We hope you will come back and visit again and enjoy our hospitality all over again,

Very warmest wishes

“Can only be described as average.”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

Good attentive staff but disappointed with the food. I had the special as a main (Sea Bream). The fish was over cooked and the vegetables were, although cooked correctly they appeared to have been hanging around a while as they were discoloured and the watercress garnish was limp. I went to this pub with great expectations after reading the reviews on here, maybe it was because they were very busy as it was Regatta week, but this is no excuse. I will be interested to see the owners response to this review.
P.S just as a final point, the shelves we were sitting next to were covered in dust, not something I would expect to see in an establishment serving food,

Dear ClaraS

Oh dear. Average?? Thats a real shame as we want each and every guest to our award winning pub to walk away having been delighted (as 95% of the review on here reflect and in fact another 2 received the same day as yours!). So, no - average is not good enough for us.

However, we do take ALL of the reviews we receive very seriously (not just the great ones) and use them as the opportunity to grow and make ourselves even better. I'm really sorry you didn't enjoy your visit to us as much as you would have liked, and as for the dust on shelves? I shall be having a look as soon as possible - as especially in this newly refurbished pub, we prideourselves on our cleanliness!

If you decide to come back again to Salcombe, do contact me and we'll see if we can make your next visit far more enjoyable for you.

Warmest wishes

“Lovely every time”

Fish for lunch and dinner this week and both were great along with a pint, or two, of ale. Family loved it. Smashing place and hopefully we will be back time and again.

“Just Gets Better Each Visit!”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

My friend and I and my two dogs visited the Vic over Regatta week, so I did book to ensure a table. I last visited in December and couldn't wait to see the new refurbishment. I have been coming here many years and it is always a worry when the familiar is being changed. However, it is absolutely lovely what has been done, very spacious but keeping a good atmosphere and the upstairs where we sat is so pleasant with the doors open to the large garden. The staff were very friendly, not just the one looking after you - they all said hello and it's nice to see staff with smiles on their faces!! The lunch we had -Sea Food Platter- was delicious, but sadly left no room for any desserts. The menu was extensive, and there was even a menu for our doggy companions ( it is so appreciated that you allow well behaved dogs in here so thank you). I cannot wait to come again in December with the family, they are looking forward to seeing the new Vic and sampling the menu, as I told them, it just gets better and better! Thank you so much for a lovely lunch, we really enjoyed our visit.

Wow - what a fulsome and glowing review.......... Thank you so very much and we are of course very pleased that you enjoyed your visit to us with your dogs as companions.

We love dogs in our award winning pub and can tell you that since February we have raised over £700 for the Hearing Dogs Charity through our Al a Bark menu!

We shall look forward to welcoming you back in December, until then
