Good food, friendly staff, log fire burning, good beer... The staff made us welcome when everywhere else in town seemed closed.

This was our first visit to the Fort for quite some time, and we have heard that its under new ownership.

We arrived for a pub lunch at about 230. It was busy but we were found a table in the bar area. The chap behind the bar, Josh, looked after us admirably. His interaction with our children was fantastic: friendly, couteous and natural.

The children had beautiful fish fingers, fillets of cod in a delicious light batter. Our mains were superb. The steak and stilton pie had been cooked such that the meat was very tender and the mash was light and fluffy. The burger was tasty, cooked to my liking (medium to rare) and served with some great crispy chips and a nice little side salad.

The staff and food are a credit to the new owners who deserve to do well. This is a good honest pub with reasonably priced quality food.

On our first night in Salcombe we went into the Fortescue. It was packed and we were soaked to the skin as the heavens had opened !! Asking at the bar if they had a table for seven the bar man went and sought out the manager, they did a lot of rushing around and said if we could wait five minutes they could help. And sure enough they squeezed in a very grateful group of drowned rats...Got our drinks, menu and excellent service !! The food was hot and very tasty, freshly cooked and fresh. We had a couple of picky eaters (sorry but one is 83yr ) but no trouble at all to the helpful man taking the orders. We went back to eat here again. Thank you
