After reading previous reviews I was expecting home cooked food of great quality. When ordering you usually have had a menu delivered to you. We had to ask for ours. So first impressions on service was poor. The chips were good and the burger, one of my party ate, was good. I ordered the pie it was so average that it's hard to describe. The finishing touch of the meal was the instant gravy powder gravy, reminding me more of a fast food chain type pie than home made food. The service was polite but I only received a friendly smile when paying the bill. Sadly we will not return this year.

Hi, Thanks for your review. I am sorry if the pie was not up to scratch. Not too sure what would have happened. PS no gravy powder in our kitchen??
Best regards

David

The Fortescue Inn felt like the most relaxed of the pubs in Salcombe and the one in which there might be a remote chance of finding a local, rather than just those with holiday homes or passing on yachts! As someone with family roots in Salcombe who went on many childhood holidays there, I was pleased to find somewhere that hadn't totally received the trendy, designer treatment.
The inn has two sides. There's the traditional bar, with restaurant tables. It has a warm and friendly atmosphere and great beer (we're fans of Jail Ale and Otter Bitter). We didn't actually eat, but the menu looked very good and the bar staff said, when we asked, that the chef would cook a veggie meal to order, if you gave them advance notice that you were coming and what you liked. The staff were really chatty and it made for a lovely welcome.
We also enjoyed the casual 'Ship Bar' next door, with pool table and table football. It was relaxed and jovial, without being too rowdy and a nice break from the exclusive atmosphere in the rest of town these days.
We went back a couple of times. Next time we'll definitely be eating there too.

We had a very good lunch here while in Salcombe. It was a wet day so we could not sit outside, but staff were helpful in finding us a table. The beer was good and the menu had lots of home made choices . The fish was very good as was the home made burger, but the fish chowder was truely excellent and definatly something to go back for. For a great pub style lunch we would reccomend . When the sun is shining the outside area is a great place to sit and watch the world go by.
