“A Great evening”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

Stayed at The Royal Hotel for one evening. Friendly check in with reception staff and the staff in reception were having a good giggle putting the christmas tree up. Room was fantastic, very spacious and nice and warm, comfy bed. Food was to an excellent standard and delivered promptly even though they had a large christmas party eating at the same time. The manager delivered my food and was attentive throughout the evening and chatting to all the guests when he had chance. 10/10 for this hotel.

stayed there from Saturday 23 to the 25th of November, despite no heating we had a great time even when the electric went out at about 8-8.30 pm till the late afternoon on Sunday, they did offer us alternative accommodation but we declined and stayed the night,
the staff kept the bar going as long as they could serving bitter and spirits by candle light and a roaring log fire, with dozen or so people in the bar we had a good time.
a big thank you to all the staff for trying there best and succeeding. Green king sort this building and more people will return

Thank you for your kind review given the circumstances ... I believe the we did all we could ... and the bar by candle light looked quite nice.

We are due for a full refurb next year and should return the site to its former glory.

We look forward to seeing your again soon.

We to stayed here on the weekend of 22nd/23rd November. We knew they had problems with the heating but they hoped it would be working by the Friday evening. When we arrived it was still not working but we were put in the annexe where the heating was superb as was the bright clean well equipped room. We went to the bar and had a lovely time in front of the log fire looking at the superb view chatting to the very friendly barman. We did have a problem with noise from a couple of rooms overnight but a quick word with the manager early the next morning and several rooms in the main hotel were offered and we took up room 16 with a great view. Breakfast was very good with a good selection and hard working staff looking after you. As stated in the previous review the electrics failed on Saturday evening and again the manager and staff were brilliant in very difficult circumstances. I took up their offer of moving to another hotel with taxi provided so no more could have been done. I too did not have to pay for my accommodation or bar bill which was great service. I presume that the heating and electrics are now up and running so I will have no hesitation of returning or recommending this hotel. Yes it does need a refresh but it is a grand old lady and I hope its not turned into a bright sparkling clinical hotel as it has character which needs to be maintained. Once again thanks to all the staff involved over the weekend you were great.

Well what a weekend it was ... Thank you for your kind words as I believe my staff could not have dealt with that situation any better.

You will be pleased to hear that everything is not up running and fail safe'd ... brand new boilers, new gas supply and new main fuse board meaning a worry free Christmas period for us and all guests that stay with us.

Considering the circumstances I am humbled by your kind words and we hope to see you again soon.

Kind regards

Stayed here 19/20th Nov with my sister for a 'girlie' break, and cannot understand some of the negative comments. We were made very welcome, had a twin room with sliding patio doors, great view, and small balcony - bit too cold at this time of year, but nice to have it. My sister feels the cold and was worried about being warm enough (it was the coldest spell so far this winter) but we didn't need to worry, the heating in the room was excellent. It was also spotlessly clean and everything worked perfectly. There were blazing log fires in all the reception rooms, great choice of food for breakfast - Bar food was excellent and very reasonable. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, and when I reached home and realised I had left my mobile in the room - Joe the manager was most helpful and I received it at 9.30 a.m. the next day. It was a pleasure to stay there and we look forward to visiting again after next years planned refurbishment.

Thank you for your kind words and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay.

We love our log fires and I am known for making them "well" ... (I haven't started a chimney fire yet)

We are looking forward to the refurbishment too and we cannot wait to welcome you back to see the site nice and sparkly.

Kind regards

We stayed at the royal on the weekend of 23/24 Nov.
We knew they had problems with the heating but we were hopeful it was repaired No No No coldest w/e ever and no heating and guess what no ELECTRIC due to no heating every room had electric heaters which overloaded the circuit. But I must say the management and staff were fantastic they were all helpful and caring all I can say is Green king you have great great staff and a great hotel please modernise it your staff deserve better . Must mention the manager at the hotel refunded my money for the Saturday stay and the bar bill great bit of customer relations.

Thank you for your kind review in light of the situation we were all placed in over the weekend!

Everything is now up running working and fixed, after a few lengthy conversations and a 35 hour shift. THE HEATING IS NOW FULLY FUNCTIONAL and the electricity is now not under threat with the heating up and running.

I have drafted a letter to all guests that were with us on the night in question giving them a complimentary stay in any hotel across the estate as my way of saying thank you and sorry for the unfortunate events that unfolded ... you will receive your in the post in due course.

Kindest regards

Fantastic location within easy walking distance of the centre of town. Extremely friendly staff who really go out of their way for you. Large bright rooms. If I had to say anything negative about the royal hotel it would be the noise from the extractor fan in the bathroom, but that would be really picky and didn't detract in any way from our visit.
