“updated and great value”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

I have stayed at the Royal many times, the last about a year ago, since then they have been busy refurbing and for the money I think this hotel is great value, polite staff and a good breakfast make this a good option if you want or need to stay in Ross.

Old fashioned hotel with lots of character in a town centre position but with lovely views over the river Wye. Refurbishment taking place. Great breakfast if a little slow with service. We did not eat in the evening in the restaurant. Cosy bar with a real fire and friendly staff. Ample parking. Our room was massive with a comfortable bed and three windows with panoramic views. Some of the furniture was a little tired but the room had character. The bathroom had a noisy fan which was not fixed during the stay (waiting parts) but as no window had to turn it on with the light switch. Bathroom not the best but acceptable. Ample parking.

Room Tip: Corner room on first floor facing the river

Went here to eat- waited 40 minutes for order to be taken, food took over an hour to arrive after being told 3 times over 25 minutes that they were plating ours up! Tables around us arrived after and served before. When the food did arrive it was poor and not worth the price tags- very low end pub grub but high end prices. After complaining were offered free desserts, but these took hlf an hour to arrive despite there being very few people left by then.

I went here for coffee and a cake this week. The weather was lovely so we sat outside on the balcony where you have beautiful views over the river and countryside. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The coffee came with some melt in the mouth fudge - delicious - and the cake was good too! Will definitely go back and sample lunch next time.

We visited The Royal Hotel on Wednesday evening with our daughter. It has been refurbished since our last stay early in the year. It was a beautiful evening so we sat outside on the patio to eat our meal. The views over the river were stunning but unfortunately we couldn't say the same about the food and service. Service was slow and although the young staff were kind and helpful it was obvious that they needed more staff to cope with the numbers of diners. Meal was very mediocre.

I visited this hotel in the earlier part of the year and meant to comment! This is an' Old English Inn 'we were very lucky to have a dry week- end the river was in flood however it still looked beautiful the hotel was a lovely very old fashioned the staff were outstanding and funny(dining room) wanted to treat you like friends breakfast was excellent as were the evening meals there was such variety why go out so we opted to stay by log fire!! The hotel was going to undergo a re-fit which I believe has now been done! can't wait to go back soon Many thanks for making our stay so enjoyable What a fab place Ross-On-Wye is!!

Room Tip: They have 2 huge rooms overlooking river can't remember number however will be having one next v...

Initial response not good. Very unpleasant grotty doors from car park could do with a lick of paint; or at least a clean with sugar soup.
The First receptionist we met – trainee I think - not very helpful by saying my request for ground floor apartment had not been met because I had not booked earlier enough. Three weeks? And, no lift because it was a Grade II Listed Building – which is wrong. The steep climb to first floor was extremely challenging carrying luggage and no help available; nor offered.
We booked a Premier room (which had a view of unoccupied ground floor apartments!) Pleasant enough with a double aspect – but the shower cubicle was virtually unusable because the door was off its hinge. (Its’ temporary repair was not successful and we were told it would take a few days for necessary spare parts to arrive – we were only on a two day visit, so would not enjoy that pleasure).
Things picked up from then onwards mainly because of three outstandingly loyal members of the team. A “Jill of all trades” receptionist; a particularly attendant and caring waiter, and a bar man capable of carrying on a conversation with everyone and ensuring they were all served as rapidly as possible with enthusiasm.
Try the Steak Sandwich for lunch – Best ever!

Room Tip: Get full details of room before you book.. Hotel has very steep and long winding staircase. No po...
