“Excellent value and food of a consistently high quality”

As well as dinner in October, we lunched here in August. After both occasions we asked ourselves why we ever go anywhere else to eat in this area. As always the food was excellent (less pretentious and more enjoyable than The Crown at Whitebrook) and the service equally good. This time we had the Sunday night supper, amazing value at £20 and plenty of choice. The bar area is wonderfully comfortable too. Our only criticism is that sometimes the restaurant lacks ambiance but that is a very minor quibble which has never deterred us.

“Consistently superb food, delightful owners & staff, beautiful setting ...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2011

I cannot recommend this hotel & restaurant highly enough.

We eat out with friends most Saturdays and have done for about 15 years. Since we discovered Glewstone Court, nigh on ten years ago, it has been top of our list, which is truly remarkable.

It's a beautiful old building set in characterful gardens, with a spectacular cedar tree alongside the entrance drive.

The Drawing Room/Bar area is such a lovely place to start your evening.

Bill, Christine and their staff are always welcoming and it's a joy to have a pre-dinner drink with a delicious canape or two. Then to mull over the mouth-watering choices on the menu is heavenly.

We ate in the elegantly stylish Dining Room last night which has great atmosphere.
(I would add that it's not a stuffy, feel like you have to whisper type of place).

The food was absolutely delicious from the first mouthful to the last. The balance of the food is so well thought out, a lot of which is sourced locally, the portion size is excellent and the presentation superb.

The service is attentive without being over-bearing.

We ended our evening in the Drawing Room with Bill, Christine and other guests, which was such a lovely, relaxing way to end a perfect night.

It's tempting to visit more often but we want to keep it as a "special occasion" place.

“An evening ruined - never again”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2011

We went to the hotel for our wedding anniversary with our children.

Bar service was good and the food was good (the broclli was under-cooked and the potatoes weren't cooked properly). The dining room is very cramped and we were stuck next to the entrance to the private dining room which was being used by a large family birthday. This meant that a steady procession of people getting drunker and drunker pushed past our table to visit the loo. One woman was so drunk she was having to be held upright and yet the hotel still served here a double G&T in the bar afterwards.

The bar was turned into a rowdy pub by this party and the overly-familiar owner did nothing to stop them, even though the hotel guests were calling down to complain about the noise. We were stuck there because our taxi was late and in the end sat in the empty bistro to get away from the noise. This was just before they started singing evangelical hymns (badly) at the tops of their voices.

When I spoke to the owner next morning, he was more upset about a vase that they broke than my evening. He then said that he could do nothing to stop them drinking, whis is odd when he does in fact have a legal obligation to do so..

Would we go back? Never! there is much better food and service locally, at the Crown in Whitebrook for example that we don't need to waste our money again.

Glewstone, Guest Relations Manager at Glewstone Court Restaurant, responded to this review, 10 September 2011
Firstly may I say how incredibly distressed we all were here at The Court to receive such a negative review on this forum. As you can see from previous posts it is very rare for us to get such a critical review and we therefore take the matter very seriously.

With regards to the food I am so glad you at least seemed to enjoy the meal itself. Our vegetables are normally cooked slightly al dente, but it is never normally a problem to cook them a bit more if that is your taste, and we would have been delighted to do so if we had been asked on the evening.

I feel we must put our hands up and admit that yes the party of 24 people we had in on Saturday were rather rowdier than we had anticipated and apologise for the adverse impact they had on your evening. The family in question have been regular customers of ours for over 10 years now and were celebrating a 40th birthday with what was supposed to be a dignified and intimate family dinner party in the private dining room. Neither us or in fact the couple who organised the party expected it to get quite so lively as it did, and the birthday boy himself came in the next day to apologise for the behaviour of some of his guests. Had we known that it would have been as loud as it was we would certainly have had second thoughts about taking the booking, as Glewstone is not and has never been ‘a function hotel’ that caters for that sort of party.

I also feel I must mention that when your wife rang up to make the booking only the day before, our restaurant manager did let her know that there was a large party coming in, and tried to tweak the booking as much as possible so that you would be sat after the party had gone in to the restaurant –Please do not think that I am implying that you not enjoying the evening was your own fault as you knew what you were letting yourselves in for, I certainly don’t mean that, I am merely pointing out that our staff did do their best to let you know. Unfortunately, due to the fact that your table was only booked the day before you came to us the table we put you on was the last available table that would seat a party of 4, which is why you ended up as the closest table to the door of the private dining room. All of our other tables that can seat 4 had already been booked weeks in advance, but we certainly would have been happy to re-lay one of those and move you as soon as it became available if you had mentioned on the night that you were unhappy with where you were seated.

With regards to the woman who ‘was so drunk she was having to be held upright’ as I mentioned earlier everyone who was attending the party have been regular customers of ours for well over a decade, and as such the bar staff perhaps felt that they knew them and their limits well enough to warrant serving them another drink. All of our staff were well aware that the party organiser had arranged taxis to pick up all of the guests attending the party, and that there was no danger of anyone drinking and driving that evening, which is perhaps another reason why they felt comfortable serving them.

When one of our residents called downstairs at 10.15pm to say that they were having trouble getting to sleep we did do our best to control the noise levels by shifting the louder members of the party through to the bar area away from the stairs to the bedrooms and shutting the door behind them. As I mentioned earlier we were aware that taxis had been booked so it was a case of our staff trying to keep them as quiet as possible and contained in the bar area until their lifts arrived. I know for a fact that I personally had a few words with the wife of the birthday boy asking her to try and keep them quiet, and I was not the only one. I would like to try and reassure you that far from doing nothing to try and stop them we were doing the best we could to control the noise and their behaviour.

When you came back to the hotel to collect your car the next day you did express how disappointed you were in the way the night had gone. You mentioned in your review that you felt that Bill (the owner) was more upset about a vase that got broken than in your evening.
In actual fact it was not a vase that got broken but an 18th century antique Irish Georgian table that has been in Bill’s family for 5 generations. I believe that when he mentioned this to you he was not trying to imply that that was far more important than your evening, but more trying to empathise with/agree with you that they were disruptive. He did mention that should you choose to come back to Glewstone we would be more than happy to try and make it up to you, but sadly this was something you were adamant you would not give us the chance to do.

After reading your review on Tripadvisor and being understandably horrified by the adverse effect the party had on your evening we have spent the week calling round to all of the other tables we had in on Saturday night to check that they all left happy, or to apologise if not. I am relieved to report that everyone else who was in enjoyed their evening. I hope this does not sound like we are trying to single you out, I am more trying to highlight that we take all of our guest’s enjoyment seriously and try our utmost to rectify a negative situation.

I would like to say once again how very sorry we all are that you’re evening was ruined by a few people who had had a few too many. All of us here do hope that the posie of flowers we gave to your wife at the beginning of the evening and the card we had ready on the table showed in some small way that we had hoped to make your anniversary night as special as possible.

I would like to also re-state that we would be delighted and grateful to be given another chance to show you the unique ambience and charm and the good, honest Herefordshire food that make up Glewstone Court. If you do by any chance change your mind and decide to return do let us know.
