“Paddocks Cottages”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014 via mobile

We stopped in Japonica cottage for a fri to monday break with our dog. Arrived late evening and key was in cottage door as arranged. Beautifully clean cottage although decor was tired. Sizable open plan layout with two sets of patio doors which can be left open during sunny weather. Cottage was very well equipped with lots of towels, loo rolls, cleaning equipment, iron and ironing board. TV reception was good and there was a cd player privided too. Hot water was plentiful although I had baths as husband reported shower was a bit temperamental. Definitely take time to visit the local pubs for food and friendly atmosphere. Dogs welcome at both pubs. Would definitely visit again.

My overall rating does not really do the hotel justice, as we enjoyed our stay very much. But, "very good" would be misleading.
Paddocks is in a very rural, quiet location with lovely picturesque gardens. The dance floor is very nice and the ballroom is air conditioned. The hotel has a warm and slightly old fashioned feel to it, which is probably partially due to the dated, slightly tired interior, bad DIY and the "bijoux" size of the rooms. The regimented meal times, constantly locked doors (in the evening) and the 70's style menus are slightly reminiscent of Fawlty Towers.
The hotel is build into a hillside. This results in a rabbit warren like feel which is quirky, but utterly unsuitable for disabled people.

Room Tip: Ask for a good view, otherwise you may end up with view over a flat roof with an extractor fan

The dance floor is very good.
The accommodation leaves a lot to be desired and needs updating and modernising. My room was very small and the "ensuite bathroom" was in a tiny cramped cupboard.
The food is adequate (I was not expecting Lidl brand here!) and as the meals are served to order on tables for 8 or 6 people, this makes for a friendly atmosphere.
It would be useful if lunch or packed lunches were made available, and if afternoon teas could be an option, I believe that would be a popular addition.

Room Tip: Lots of steps and many levels. Some bedrooms are downstairs, so ask if you have walking disabilities...

For the price one can hardly complain about anything. I think the hotel specialises in block bookings for folk groups having a marvellous dance floor/ballroom and attenant facilities.Mealtimes are social occasions, eight to a table, and the service is efficient and friendly. The cuisine ordered by the booking agent is also excellent . Do not enter the dining room before the gong is rung! The best walks along the Wye begin at the hotel with the chance to cross the river by two ferries and so make a circular route. The bedrooms are basic and the walls in our room thin. One goes to dance, walk and engage in craft activities. For rainy days there are several good lounge areas.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the river- otherwise it is the car park.

The Paddocks will give you a comfortable, fairly old-fashioned, experience in an outstanding location in the Wye Valley. Everywhere needs freshening up, particularly the bedrooms, though bathrooms are quite adequate and the public facilities are OK. The large ballroom make this place particularly attractive to groups, as does the catering. Designer breakfasts come to the table almost as soon as you order them, brought by friendly well-trained young staff. Buffet lunches served by arrangement will satisfy everyone, and dinners are chosen from a three course, three option menu that is basic, satisfying and delightful. I never heard one complaint from our party of 50 or so on a two night dancing weekend.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the valley are much preferable to those by the car park.
