“Excellent food, most friendly staff. Go!”
Reviewed 18 October 2013 via mobile

We went on a birthday occasion and had the 7 course tasting menu. The chef came to talk us through the options and find out what we like. Food was of very distinctive flavours, nicely presented. The waitress was extremely friendly and at the same time not interfering too much. Very good value for money and they meet the high standard they claim. Portions were almost too generous for a tasting menu, so we even had to skip one dish at the end. Would definitely recommend and go again any time.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights for a wedding at the nearby castle, and I have to say Orles Barn surpassed my expectations for a B&B.

Our double room was spacious and very nicely decorated (much like the rest of the building), with the sunken bath a great feature in the room. There are also lots of nice little touches in the room (my wife loves it when a hotel supplies bathrobes, you rarely find that in a B&B but we did in this one!) including some very tasty homemade cookies.

The owner who greeted us (I forget her name, sorry!) was very friendly and accommodating (she even waited up late for us when we arrived in the evening on our first night). In the morning, we had a lovely breakfast in the spacious restaurant downstairs. The full english was made-to-order (a big plus for me, as the quality is usually a lot better than in a buffet) and one of the best I've had in any hotel/B&B I've stayed in in the UK. The sausages were proper sausages, the eggs cooked perfectly, and even the hash browns were homemade. The only thing that could have made the breakfast any better would have been a Stornoway black pudding instead of the locally-sourced one (although, if you've never had Stornoway BP, then the local black pudding they serve is as good as any you'll find in England or Wales).

In terms of the location, it is right next to a major A road, so is very easy to find. Obviously the downside to that is you are looking out to a road (if you are on that side of the building), although the long drive means it is not as bad as it sounds, and crucially, we didn't find noise an issue at all with the windows shut. The only downside to that is on a hot summers day, with windows closed, our room did get very hot. Thankfully, they supply a fan (and I'm not talking a piddly little fan, I am talking industrial size!) which I have to say we found a godsend!

If you are attending an event at the castle, as we were, it is great as the B&B is just a two minute walk away. Bit further if you want to explore Ross-on-Wye though.

Room Tip: We stayed in Orange Pippin, which was lovely

We stayed overnight last week, as I'd always wanted to visit Ross-on-Wye, and Orles Barn caught my eye when the opportunity came up.

It is a very attractive building from the exterior, and the attention to detail inside continued throughout - very clean, comfortable and with good attention to detail. The bar was very enticing and well-lit, as was the restaurant - which had a good amount of space between tables and so felt quite special.

We had the "Orange Pippin" room, with a slipper bath by the window and windows overlooking fields at the back (and the marquee), and windows to the front overlooking the Hotel car park - which is not as bad as it sounds, as it was quite private and quiet. The toiletries were from The White Company (very nice perfume). The decor was mainly white, so the room looked and felt very fresh, clean and attractive. The bathroom facilities were excellent - a shower as well as the slipper bath. The slipper bath itself was a lovely touch - it was very relaxing and added a quality feature to the room.

Access to the rooms is rather close to each other, and so there was a little noise from other guests coming and going, and light shone around the door panel opposite the bed all night, but it was pleasantly decorated and gave a very luxurious feel to the Hotel, rather than the more generic features of many hotels.

The Full English breakfast was of a good quality. The kippers were unfortunately overcooked (quite dry on the top), which was disappointing. Other people seemed to be served the same dry-topped kippers as I did - so whether this is standard or just timing issues on the day it's hard to say. The dinner was very enjoyable, nicely paced, with really good service and food of an excellent quality and design. The price of dinner was pretty high for what it was - £20 for a rib-eye steak which was not exceptional is very steep and probably unjustified. However, the bill wasn't quite as high as I had envisaged it might be. A bottle of wine is reasonably priced.

I would definitely want to stay again if out that way. The only slight niggle was the price of the meal in the evening, but the restaurant staff did everything very well and it was a memorable experience. The slipper bath was a wonderful touch to add to the room, and sets a very high standard for others to follow!

I hadn't heard of AA 5* restaurants with rooms before and I am very pleased that I stayed here. We had a downstairs suite consisting of a cute lounge area, bedroom and nice double shower room. There was an electric stove in the lounge, settee and chair and a small desk. Also provided in room was tea and coffee, cookies, water and lovely toiletries.
We chose this hotel for it's restaurant and weren't at all disappointed. The service to start with was first rate and the food was delicious and just the right sized portions. The menu should cater for all tastes. There is a nice lounge area to sit in so you can have an aperitif before eating. The bar is small and has a basic selection of drinks that will cover the basics. Wine wasn't too expensive either.
Breakfasts are included and are just what you need to set you up for the day. You can have a full Welsh breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, beans, tomatoes and mushrooms with toast. You can have any combination of this too. There is also eggs Benedict (awesome) pancakes with maple syrup (to die for) or something from the cold table such as fruit and cereals.
Overall the service and food was truly 5*. My only criticism is that the room needed a little care. There were cobwebs on the inside of the window and the wallpaper above the window in the lounge area was coming away. Something very silly too, the shower rack to hold the lovely toiletries had too large a gap between the wires so the toiletries fell through the gap. That is an easy fix.
I would love to stay here again and the location is just a short walk from the river Wye and the town of Ross-on-Wye.

On this occasion I am only reviewing afternoon tea when we called in, but I have stayed and dined here before and it was excellent - such a special place.

You have to book afternoon tea in advance, so be sure to do so if you don't want to miss out. Our afternoon tea consisted of finger sandwiches (4 different fillings), pastries, cakes and scones with jam and cream. The chocolate brownie was delicious and still a bit warm - very indulgent!

It was a lovely experience with the same high level of service that we always receive even though it was just an afternoon visit.

Make sure you book in advance - you won't want to miss out!! You can even upgrade to afternoon tea which includes a glass of prosecco - I wouldn't mind doing that some time!! Yet again, Orles Barn comes very highly recommended!! The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere also - light, airy and welcoming looking out over a large garden.

We travelled from Yorkshire to meet London friends and found everything about Orles Barn to be welcoming - all the staff are charming. Kerry chatted to us like old friends, and couldn't have done more to please us. The reception room is comfortable, the dining room light and airy, the bathrooms excellent and the bedrooms are a delight. Breakfast and dinner were delicious. A mile from Ross, this an excellent base to explore glorious countryside and lovely market towns, or if you are in the area already, to enjoy an evening dinner. With all good wishes to the staff for every well deserved success. Thank you for a memorable weekend.
