“The best ploughman's ever”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

A nice range of bar meals, mostly made from fresh local ingredients, and a selection of local ales ales at the bar. Probably the best ploughman's lunch ever, with a good selection of strange local cheeses. Friendly helpful staff.

We stayed just for one night in October 2013. Had been warned that the one way system might make it difficult to find but we didn't have too much trouble at all. A small car park is available behind the hotel reached by going through a rather narrow archway just past the entrance. Only 2 twin bedded rooms available so we booked early. Reception area was quite dark and old fashioned but our room was large, with a blend of old and new, nicely decorated with everything that you would expect. Good sized and well equipped modern bathroom as well. Quirky bit was the sloping floor in the bedroom but as its a very old hotel maybe that was to be expected and added to the character of the hotel. Lovely old oak beams all over the place. Dining room was again a blend of old and new and has a small circular glass viewing panel set in the stone floor showing an illuminated old well.
Breakfast was very good with a large menu to choose from (inc. vegetarian) plus an area where you could help yourself to a variety of fruit juice, fruit, yoghurts etc..
All the staff were very pleasant and welcoming from the moment that we arrived until we left and nothing was too much trouble.
A really lovely old hotel and would definitely return again

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel are on the main road so some traffic noise.

We stayed at the King's Head Hotel as we were attending a wedding in Malvern. Parking is behind the hotel, but beware as the entrance to the car park was very tight. The lady who checked us in was lovely - very cheerful and helpful. We hadn't booked a table for dinner, which we probably should have done but didn't realise, but she found us a small table in the library area which was cosy. The food was good, nice pub food.

The room was very comfortable and the bathroom was great, modern, wet-room style with a huge shower. There was a winding, uneven staircase which could cause problems for people with mobility issues, but I thought it added character!

Breakfast the next day was very nice, no issues. Plentiful tea and coffee and perfect portions.

The staff were a mixed bag. The lady who checked us in was absolutely lovely, but others were slightly less friendly, although this is a minor point as none were outright rude.

Overall a great experience and we would return, if only the have the opportunity to explore Ross-on-Wye!

We stayed here for a long weekend in October and had a great time. We were in a large group and so had several rooms, all of which were lovely. We had a triple room to accommodate two adults and one child and it was huge, really nicely decorated and very clean. The food was also fantastic. everyone in the group was really happy with all aspects of our stay. Thanks to all the staff for being so friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay again if we come to Ross in the future.

Arrived quite early to find reception unattended. Despite ringing bell no one arrived. Eventually was given key to room.

The Hotel is situated in the town with its own car park access to which is through a narrow archway. The room was very good, on the second floor. The stairs must be original ad they are winding and uneven. The wood beams all add to the character of this hotel. although a tad expensive for what it was.
Room 14 was on the road frontage. Partial secondary glazing removed the potential of noise. Very comfortable bed. The ensuite shower was great. Must have been recently upgraded as it had a walk in power shower which was brilliant.

The bar and restaurant were very popular. The local beers were tasty and the food Devine.all the food is sourced from local suppliers as shown on the menu boards. It is also clear they understand the issues around gluten free products. Great service from all the staff.

There is free wifi but it is not in all areas and I had several drop outs.

Well worth a stay

Hotel right in the centre of Ross on Wye. The hotel does state not suitable for people with mobility problems because of steep staircases and no lifts. Hotel has lots of character and had been refurbished, bathrooms were modern and well equipped. Ate in the restaurant one night and had an excellent meal. Would definitely stay again.
