“A lovely olde worlds pub with good food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 December 2013

Spent just one night here for a quick break. The staff were warm and friendly and we were quickly settled in. The rooms were really nice with a large, comfortable bed and everything you could need. Tastefully furnished whilst keeping the original beams and general character and creaky floors.
The bar was atmospheric and was very popular with the locals.
The pub was right in the town and very central for the shops and restaurants.
We ate in the pub restaurant and the food was excellent. Breakfast had a good choice and everything was freshly cooked to order.

Room Tip: Ask for room 111 which is the first room at the top of the stairs.

We (hubby & I) have just got home from a 2 night stay at The King's Head Hotel in Ross and as the title says, it was really lovely.

We found the hotel fairly easily and I agree with a previous reviewer; the entrance to the car park is very narrow. We went into the hotel from around the rear entrance and found a very helpful and friendly member of staff waiting to help us.

We had room number 6, a superior room overlooking the street at the front and it was a very nice room; very spacious, fantastically comfortable bed, a well fitted and modern bathroom with a great shower and large fluffy towels. We had a complimentary bottle of water and tea/coffee making facilities and nice bathroom products.

Breakfast on both mornings was delicious, the full English did the job of totally filling me up and the quality of food was excellent. The waiting staff are warm and friendly and there is a lovely ambience within the hotel, bar & restaurant. We ate dinner in the restaurant on Friday and really enjoyed it. Again the quality of food was excellent, the service was spot on and it was very good value for money. The hotel is located right on the high street but we weren't troubled by any noise, apart from an early delivery on Sunday morning but it was a minor irritant an not enough to down-mark our overall stay.

We really enjoyed our short stay, we would both highly recommend and we intend returning in the future.

We went to Ross primarily for a book signing event, but decided to have 2 nights there. The hotel is very old, but all the rooms have modern facilities. We were in a standard double which was very nice, and the shower room was very modern and big enough. All the staff were really helpfull and friendly, I was on crutches due to surgery and there is no lift, we had 2 flights of stairs (wjich we knew about and accepted) We had help with the luggage and even a late night snack carried up tp our room because we didn't want a full meal that night. The girl who brought this refused a tip. They were really lovely. One downside - The meal we had on the first night - well mine was terrible. £15 for one thin fillett of fish (supposed to be pan-fried bream) in a dark brown, salt laden "sauce" and hard dauphinois potatoes. I complained and to be fair they knocked the price off the bill. Would have prefered a decent meal though! The bar area was great - a proper old pub type bar with a fire and used by the locals so can't say better than that. Good choice of beers ciders and wines.

Room Tip: All rooms are upstairs. No lift. Due to the thickness of the walls I doubt there is ever any noise...

We had travelled from Surrey and had spent the previous night at a hotel in Newent. Having travelled this far we didn't want to simply turn around and go home again so we looked for a hotel in the area, to extend our stay, and The King's Head in Ross seemed to fit the bill.

The hotel is just above the town centre and very convenient for exploring the town on foot. Access to the hotel's car park is a bit tight, especially if you have a large car; it's through the archway just past the hotel entrance, off of a one-way street. Spaces are on a first come/first served basis.

Our room (3) was very comfortable and furnished with a four-poster. This would have been fine were it not that from one side of the bed you couldn't see the TV, screwed to the wall where it was! As the TV was in any case faulty, it didn't matter too much! Still, someone clearly hadn't given this much thought when designing the room.

The bathroom was large, well decorated, clean and well maintained. There was no bath but instead a large walk-in shower. The water was warm and delivered in good volume. A very pleasant way to start the day.

We ate in the hotel's restaurant and had a very enjoyable meal. Service was good and the food tasty and generous in quantity. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very pleasant. It is clearly very popular as it was full, with people waiting for an empty table.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, despite the issues with the TV, and would certainly stay here again if in the area. At £180 for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast, it was good value for money.

Thank you for your review, we are really pleased you enjoyed your short stay with us. Thank you as well for bringing to our attention the screen damage on the television in your room. We have of course subsequently replaced this television. The positioning of the television in this room, is such that one of the posts of the four poster bed does ever so slightly obscure the view. Unfortunately, being an old building, it’s not always possible to site everything in a bedroom perfectly and sometimes compromises have to be made. We will however, look to see if we can improve this.
Thank you again

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in November 2013. The room we had was very clean with a large comfy bed. Evening meals and breakfasts were excellent with local produce used. The one way system was a pain but we got to the hotel and there is plenty of free parking to the rear of it. Staff friendly and overall a lovely weekend break.

Excellent hotel situated right in the centre of quaint Ross on Wye. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had an excellent evening meal. The room was full of character with a Queen size bed and was very clean. Breakfast was also very good.

Room Tip: We had room 6 which was only up one flight of stairs and situated at the front of the hotel.

A nice range of bar meals, mostly made from fresh local ingredients, and a selection of local ales ales at the bar. Probably the best ploughman's lunch ever, with a good selection of strange local cheeses. Friendly helpful staff.
